Amentum is currently seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Chemical Engineer.   This talented individual will work to support the U.S. Combat Capabilities and Development Command Soldier Center (CCDC SC). In addition to other duties, this Chemical Engineer will focus on assisting with the stand-up of a biopolymer-based fibers and nanomaterials spinning facility using melt, wet, dry-jet wet, and electrospinning techniques at the Soldier Center. The candidate will serve as the focal point for both current and future research and development efforts and will routinely coordinate with agencies and organizations to best support the Soldier Center team. You will be at the forefront of the Army’s latest developments in materials technology in support of the individual soldier. This position is on site at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Limited travel may be required. Other duties may be assigned to support client and contract deliverables.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist and provide guidance in developing a lab with pilot line equipment and sourcing solutions. Must be able to identify gaps in processing equipment necessary to complete the wet spinning process. Identify equipment for dope pre-processing (grinding, particle sizing) and dope dissolution (kneaders, mixers, and screw design for extruder systems).
  • Assist and provide guidance in identifying optimal dope formulations of 100% cellulose dopes and cellulose by conducting rheological experiments.
  • Assist and provide guidance in optimizing the wet spinning process both on lab and pilot level systems.
  • Assist and provide guidance in designing and optimizing coagulation conditions, washing and drying conditions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must possess a PhD in Chemical Engineering
  • Minimum of 9 years of experience with cellulose fibers
  • Proven ability to work independently and solve complex problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with personnel at all levels.
  • Must have prior experience with polymer science, rheology, and fiber engineering.
  • Experience with the design of biopolymer-based fibers and nanomaterials using melt, wet, dry-jet wet, and electrospinning techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain design concepts, analyze and solve problems, prepare presentations, and receive feedback.
  • Excellent collaboration, multi-tasking and communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and organize work effectively as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working at MIT and associated Research lab facilities
  • Previous experience with rheology-driven design and property optimization, integrating molecular dynamics to spinnability and end-use performance

       

Compensation Details:

$105K
