The Control Room Alarm Response Technician provides critical
24/7 technical support to ensure rapid response, triage, and
resolution of alarm conditions and operational issues across the
Pfizer Groton site. Working 12-hour rotating day/nights on the DuPont
Schedule. These technicians deliver advanced expertise in utilities operations, Building Management Systems (BMS), and mechanical systems. This role serves as the site wide “Do-It-Now” resource, minimizing downtime, preventing escalation of issues, and supporting uninterrupted scientific operations.

Key Responsibilities

  •  Monitor and respond immediately to alarm conditions across the site, including the central chiller plant, support systems, and numerous validated and non-validated Building Management Systems. Systems monitored include EBI Honeywell, Siemens, TVC Central Utilities Building, Siemens Desigo, Edstrom Watchdog Water, PCMM POD, and lighting alarms. Respond under the direction of the Control Room Operator (CRO), performing triage, assessment, first-response troubleshooting, minor repairs, operator care, and escalation as appropriate.

  • Provide on-site immediate response to eliminate travel delays for on-call personnel, enabling rapid triage and repairs that minimize impact on lab and scientific operations.

  • Perform proactive facility rounds and tours of all mechanical spaces, substations, and critical areas to identify and correct issues such as leaks, abnormal noises, odors, or operational deviations before they impact reliability. Maintain a vigilant “eyes and ears” approach throughout the facility.

  • Make equipment rounds, record data, complete data sheets, and correct operating equipment deviations while making informed decisions based on readings.

  • Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) to ensure space conditions remain in accordance with scientific requirements, supporting operational continuity and regulatory compliance.

  • Review all planned and communicated shutdowns daily to maintain 100% real-time preparedness.

  • Operate and line up utilities distribution systems (including chilled water, nitrogen, steam, air, and lab waste) while executing corrective actions for abnormal events or system failures to ensure regulatory compliance and system reliability.

  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks under the Operator Care Program during nights and weekends. This enables day-shift technicians to focus on backlog reduction and higher-priority initiatives, optimizing overall team productivity and facility performance.

  • Actively support Amentum’s Good Catch Program by promptly identifying, documenting, and mitigating potential risks to personnel, equipment, and site operations, thereby strengthening the overall safety culture and preventing small issues from escalating into larger problems.

  • Collaborate closely with Control Room Operators (CROs) and trade teams to deliver timely customer notifications, real-time updates, and effective issue resolution, enhancing transparency and responsiveness with science colleagues.

  • Perform minor repairs or control equipment resets on operating or non-operating equipment as needed and notify technicians for repairs beyond the scope of the role.

  • Provide skilled “Do-It-Now” technical support across mechanical, instrumentation, and BMS systems to lower long-term maintenance costs and support high-uptime performance for the entire facility.

Breadth of Knowledge & Essential Functions

  •  Demonstrated experience with large industrial boiler operations.

  • Experience with steam turbine and auxiliary systems.

  • Experience with gas turbine and auxiliary systems.

  • Strong maintenance acumen with proven ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve complex operational and mechanical issues.

  • Familiarity with HVAC systems, support system operation, and air handlers.

  • Familiarity with large chiller plants, cooling towers, and associated support equipment, including knowledge of refrigeration cycles and process cooling.

  • Ability to perform minor repairs or control equipment resets on operating or non-operating equipment as needed.

  • Ability to take readings, measurements, and complete data sheets; make informed decisions based on those readings.

  • Understanding of research building layouts and area criticality, including familiarity with building utility isolation valves.

  • Operation and monitoring of chilled water systems in the Central Utilities Buildings, along with distribution of nitrogen, steam, air, and lab waste.

  • Provide first-response customer service for alarm conditions, including appropriate escalation.

  • This position requires broad technical expertise in operations, BMS, process instrumentation, general maintenance, and mechanical systems. It is essential for strengthening 24/7 site resilience. 


Communication

  •  Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint

  •  Ability to communicate clearly via phone

  •  Ability to work closely with customer during site emergencies. 

  •  Excellent oral and written communications

  •  Excellent interpersonal skills, i.e., listening to customer needs, articulating path forward and giving solutions that provide value to the customer, etc.

  •  Accurately document electronic and paper cataloging system to provide information to customer or regulatory personnel.  

  • Strive for quick complaint resolution; to resolve problems on the first call and avoid escalation of issues through operational knowledge. 

Minimum Requirements

  • High school graduate or demonstrated equivalent.

  • Six years of facility maintenance or equivalent experience

  •  Working knowledge of a CMMS such as MAXIMO, EAMS or equivalent database systems.

  • Ability to pass a medical evaluation for respirator use and be able to successfully complete a fit test for several types of respirators.

  • Ability to obtain a security access badge at our client’s location.

  • Ability to read and understand information contained in a variety of documents or displayed on a computer screen. Demonstrated fluency in computer use including the full Microsoft product line.

  • Ability to obtain an appropriate driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, as requested.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location. 

  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization. 

Some physical/special requirements include:

  • Regularly lift to 50 lbs

  • Regularly climb ladders, steps, and scaffolding

  • Repetitive motions: bend, stoop, squat, kneel, stretch, reach, wrist movement

  • Walk extensively throughout the plant during shift

  •  Work at an accelerated pace in emergency conditions

  • Ability to differentiate colors pertaining to wire color-coding

  •  Wear steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and other Personal Protective Equipment as needed.

  • Cope with demands (stressors) that are associated with the job and/or the work environment.

Preferred Requirements

  • Technical degree preferred.

  • Licenses CT OE2/S2, CT E1/E2, CT P1/P2

  •  Experience working in a GMP or similar regulated environment such as hospitals, biomedical or pharmaceutical campuses.

  • Experience in employee and subcontracted work coordination in a predictive and reliability-based facility maintenance program.

  • Experience interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
