The Part-Time Engineering Technician I will support the LASEI (Laser Spark Evaluating Inflow) project by assisting with experimental setup, laser diagnostics, data collection, and data processing. The technician will align optics and lasers, operate schlieren systems, gather spectral and schlieren data, and maintain lab equipment. This position also includes writing and editing LabVIEW/MATLAB code, designing 3D-printable components in SolidWorks, and assisting in the analysis of experimental data to inform project direction.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: - Must be at least a junior undergraduate student pursuing an engineering degree.
- Prior experience in the lab working with class 4 lasers, optics, and pressure vessels.
- Proficiency with LabVIEW, MATLAB, SolidWorks, and 3D printing software.
- Familiarity with optical alignment, spectrometers, EMCCDs/ICCDs, and spectral calibration.
- Hands-on experience with schlieren imaging and generating laser-induced sparks.
The base salary range for this position is $20.96/hr. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

- Lifting equipment and positioning components on optical tables.
- Standing for long periods.
- Reaching and working within confined lab spaces.
- Steady hand required for optical alignment.
- Use of safety gear around Class 4 lasers.
Description of Work Environment:
- Work performed primarily indoors in a laboratory and office setting.
- Exposure to lasers, electrical equipment, and pressurized systems.
- Controlled temperature and pressure environments during tests.
- Strict safety protocols in place due to use of lasers and high-voltage equipment
Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks:
- Class 4 lasers.
- Spectrometers, EMCCDs, ICCDs, power meters.
- Optical alignment tools (lenses, mirrors, fiber bundles)
- Computers, LabVIEW/MATLAB software.
- 3D printers.
- Pressure vessels, coolant systems, and airflow control
systems
Criticality of Attendance:
- Technician must be present on scheduled lab test days.
- Regular attendance during summer (40 hrs/week) and academic semester (20 hrs/week)
- Flexibility during academic term to accommodate class schedule.
- Timely participation in daily video meetings with supervisors required.
Other Essential Functions:
- Independent execution of experimental tasks with remote guidance.
- Clear, prompt communication of progress and issues.
- Contribution to experimental design and troubleshooting.
- Maintenance and proper storage of lab equipment.
- Compliance with lab safety and data handling procedures.
