Essential Responsibilities:

  • The Heavy Equipment Operator operates equipment in a safe and effective manner to minimize risk of injury, property damage, or loss of life. Equipment may include, but is not limited to, Forklift (10k or higher), RTCH (Kalmar) 50k, and various types of military equipment. This role supports assigned missions by operating heavy equipment for tasks such as rail support movements.
  • The Heavy Equipment Operator performs daily Preventive Maintenance Checks (PMCS) on equipment prior to operation and at the completion of mission task assignments or at the end of a work shift.
  • Supports additional Unit Movement Branch tasks as directed.
  • Performs daily safety checks to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Inspects, cleans, and performs operator-level maintenance on equipment in accordance with established standards.
  • Closely interacts with customers for the movement of materials and equipment.
  • Follows all related safety regulations, contract requirements, company policies, and operating procedures.
  • Ensures equipment is properly utilized, maintained, and stored.
  • Completes necessary documentation, reporting, and limited office duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Work is performed in a shop environment that is moderately lighted, heated and ventilated, is exposed to disagreeable fumes and to cuts and bruises from using tools in close placed and hazards of moving vehicles such as forklifts and sweepers in shop area. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. Frequently lifts items weighing 40-45 pounds and occasionally in excess of 50 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, or may include unsafe conditions, questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required. 
  • Minimum one year experience as an Equipment Operator or completion of recognized apprenticeship program.
  • Must be able to obtain a license following on-the-job training, operating several types of heavy equipment such as a 10K or 12K Forklift, 50 Ton Rough Terrain Container Handler, and a variety of Military Vehicles.
  • Able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Available to work different shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
