Amentum is seeking a HVAC Refrigeration Mechanic to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The HVAC Refrigeration Mechanic will be responsible for leading and participating in the installation, maintenance, modification, overhaul, service, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and equipment. The HVAC Refrigeration Mechanic provides hands on technical leadership to HVAC personnel, coordinates daily work activities, ensures work is completed safely and in accordance with applicable specifications and requirements, and supports the successful completion of assigned projects.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead, supervise, and participate in the work of HVAC crews performing installation, maintenance, repair, modification, overhaul, and servicing of air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment.
- Coordinate daily HVAC activities and ensure personnel are appropriately assigned based on workload, skill level, project requirements, and available resources.
- Ensure HVAC work is performed in accordance with blueprints, drawings, manufacturer specifications, applicable codes, safety requirements, and written or verbal instructions.
- Review work requirements and provide technical direction and guidance to HVAC technicians and other assigned personnel.
- Develop and coordinate work schedules to ensure proper distribution of assignments, adequate staffing, and timely completion of required work.
- Monitor work progress and communicate project status, potential delays, operational concerns, and resource requirements, to appropriate management.
- Analyze work performance, identify trends, or recurring issues, and recommend solutions and process improvements.
- Implement and support preventive maintenance programs for air conditioning, refrigeration, and related HVAC systems and equipment.
- Train, coach, and mentor HVAC personnel in proper maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and safe work practices.
- Monitor personnel performance and provide guidance to ensure assigned work is completed to established quality and performance standards.
- Fabricate, assemble, modify, and install ductwork, chassis components, and related HVAC parts using appropriate portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.
- Install, connect, troubleshoot, and service motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, circulating fans, control panels, and related HVAC components.
- Connect control panels to appropriate power sources and ensure electrical and control connections are properly installed and maintained.
- Install, repair, troubleshoot, and service air conditioning systems and equipment, including systems up to approximately 20 tons where qualified and authorized.
- Diagnose HVAC and refrigeration system malfunctions using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with established procedures and manufacturer recommendations. - Inspect completed work to verify proper installation, operation, workmanship, and compliance with applicable requirements.
- Maintain appropriate records, maintenance documentation, work orders, inspection reports, and other required technical or operational documentation.
- Ensure tools, equipment, materials, and work areas are maintained in a safe, clean, organized, and serviceable condition.
- Promote and enforce safe work practices and ensure personnel follow applicable safety procedures and requirements.
- Identify hazardous conditions and take appropriate action to protect personnel, equipment, facilities, and the environment.
- Perform emergency or corrective HVAC repairs as required to support operational requirements.
- Support other HVAC related activities and qualified duties as assigned based on the needs of the assignment or contract.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing HVAC and refrigeration maintenance, repair, installation, or related trade work.
- Previous experience leading or coordinating HVAC personnel is preferred.
- Experience working with commercial, industrial, military, government, or other complex HVAC systems is preferred.
- Certification in heating and air conditioning or equivalent demonstrated competency.
- Technical/vocational certificate, diploma, apprenticeship or other recognized trade qualification in HVAC, refrigeration and air conditioning (HVAC/RAC), or a closely related discipline; City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 or recognized national equivalent is acceptable.
- Must possess current certification(s) applicable to the HVAC/refrigeration trade, including refrigerant handling certification where required by the applicable jurisdiction.
- Refrigerant Recovery/Recycling certification, where applicable.
- Intermediate to advanced skills necessary to perform assigned HVAC/refrigeration tasks with minimal to no supervision.
- Must be able to read write and speak English
- Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
- Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
- Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
- Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
- Must read, speak, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
- A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Working Environment
This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in offices, industrial warehouses, ports, airfields, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.
Physical Requirements
Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
