The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.
The Ground Systems Support (GSS) organization is looking for Mechanical Technician for the Launch Equipment Shop (LES) who supports multiple programs for National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA). The candidate will provide troubleshooting and repair for manufacturing equipment, Daily checks and maintenance of machine shop equipment, tear down and assembly of parts and equipment at the LES. A background in maintenance and repair of manufacturing and fabrication is highly desirable.
THIS IS A REPRESENTED POSITION
Responsibilities - Perform quality work in the operation, maintenance and repair of machine and fabrication shop fixtures, equipment, and facilities.
- Interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions to carry out assignments.
- Work directly with engineering personnel and technicians on the installation, and operation of components, special systems, and equipment.
- Buildup of manufactured parts into final assemblies per print and work instructions.
- Operate forklift and man-lift equipment in the performance of work assignments as required.
- Work at elevated locations using systems/equipment such as ladders, man-lifts, scaffolding and other work platforms.
- Operate appropriate shop mechanical equipment, systems, and tools in the performance of work duties.
- Clean hardware and components prior to, during, and after assembly using established procedures and specifications.
- Maintain equipment as necessary, including preventive maintenance, repairs, or replacement of parts.
- Execute all work duties in a skilled, safe, and technically acceptable manner.
- Wear and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing during performance of work duties, to include safety glasses/goggles, hard hats, gloves, masks, respirators, coveralls, harnesses, etc.
- Identify and correct potential hazards and/or unsafe acts/conditions at the work site.
- Notify Supervision of any hazards in the workplace and advise on potential corrective actions.
- Maintain work area in a neat, orderly, and safe condition.
- Perform work in other classifications when incidental, but necessary to accomplish work assignment.
- Provides day to day technical support for operations and maintenance issues
- Interface with customers and communicate completion of tasks on schedule, to the customer's satisfaction
Qualifications - External High School Diploma or equivalent and technical training in the applicable area and three years related experience.
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
- Demonstrate advanced communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate work status, resolve technical issues and assist in troubleshooting and identifying solutions to ensure continuation of work to meet demanding schedules.
- Must be able to coordinate work between multiple projects disciplines.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects without missing deadlines or sacrificing accuracy.
- Must be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and be able to work in dynamic environments.
- Must be able to work independently or with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated written and verbal presentation skills for interfacing with management and customers (internal and external)
- Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, lifts, pendant cranes, and precision measuring and testing equipment is required.
- Familiar with basic mechanical equipment and systems.
- Ability to build positive/effective relationships with clients and co-workers and demonstrates focus on satisfying both internal and external customers.
- Accepts responsibility for safety of yourself and others.
Essential FunctionsPhysical Requirements - Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.
- Physical requirements are sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.
Work Environment - All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and Company safety standards.
- Will be required to work inside and outside throughout the test complex.
- Position requires daily individual to travel to different areas on site.
- Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations on the facility.
Equipment and Machines - Operate computer terminals, personal computers, and related computer peripheral equipment to maintain/adjust database logs and records, print documents and record work performance.
- Personal computer, scanner, copy machine, telephone, laser printer, fax machine, and other office equipment including desk supplies.
Attendance - Work assignments are normally 8 hours shifts, 5 consecutive days per week.
- Must be dependable and punctual.
- Occasional overtime, sometimes with short notice, is required to meet demanding schedule
Other Essential Functions - If offered a position, proof of U.S. Citizenship or Legal Permanent Resident/Green Card holder of the United States is required.
- Needs to have clear, concise, and accurate communication skills.
- Must have ability to work well with office staff and customer representatives.
- Government security clearance may be required in the future.
- Must be able to travel to support position requirements. This may include travel to and from customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can be made for POV, if necessary.
- Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
- Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
- Must pass a federal background investigation.
- Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions.
