Position Description

About the position

The ECLSS Materials Engineer will provide technical materials engineering expertise to support the regenerative Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) for the International Space Station (ISS), and future space systems including those for extended operations on the Moon and Mars. This role involves materials engineering analysis, mechanical design, testing, and analysis to enhance life support systems and troubleshoot issues with ECLSS systems.

US Citizen and STAR ID required. This position is on-site in our Huntsville, AL location.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical Materials engineering expertise for NASA ECLSS systems.
  • Support system engineering and mechanical design of ECLSS Systems.
  • Conduct evaluation of materials of construction and verify standard requirements compliance.
  • Develop materials usage agreements and material usage lists.
  • Write material control plans and participate in design reviews.
  • Support testbed development, recommend required tests, and report results.


A degree in Materials, Aerospace, Chemical, Mechanical, or a related technical discipline is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 15 years of relevant experience, MS with 13+ years or PhD with 9+ years of experience.

Applicants must have the following required qualifications:

    • A minimum of 2 years of applicable experience in Aerospace systems and analysis is required.
    • Experience with materials properties and evaluation of designs for proper material specifications.
    • Experience in identifying and isolating materials issues related to long life cycles.
    Nice-to-haves
    • Hands-on experience with gaseous and liquid fluid flow systems.
    • Working knowledge of NASA systems and procedures.
    • Working knowledge of Aerospace flight system component configuration and analysis
    • T raining in safely using and/or designing oxygen systems.
    • Training in safely using or designing hydrogen systems.
    • At least 2 years of knowledge of thermal/fluid components, systems, and associated instrumentation is required.

Work Environment:

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<5%)

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (<10%)

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
