The Human Landing System (HLS) Propulsion Systems Engineer will work in a highly integrated team performing technical and integration activities to support main propulsion systems and launch vehicles.

Responsibilities:

This posting is for a Systems Engineer to support NASA’s Human Exploration Development and Operations (HEDO) Office at Marshall Space Flight Center. This position directly supports the Multi-Purpose Habitation (MPH) effort and focuses on change package processing, document ownership, configuration management coordination, and Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) tracking in support human-rated exploration systems.

The selected candidate will serve as a detail oriented, organized engineer capable of managing documentation lifecycle activities, supporting formal review boards, and ensuring technical products are controlled, traceable, and properly integrated across the MPH team to include international partners.

The responsible engineer will:

  • Serve as change package engineer for assigned MPH products, preparing, processing, and tracking documentation through formal review and approval boards.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage engineering documentation and electronic records supporting bilateral exchanges, cross-project/program agreements, and joint project/program plans.
  • Act as document owner for assigned products, incorporating stakeholder feedback and ensuring technical accuracy and version control.
  • Coordinate document reviews across multidisciplinary teams and ensure timely incorporation of comments and resolutions.
  • Process documentation and exchange records through control boards, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), and other formal approval forums.
  • Track and manage Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) documentation and exchange records, including status, configuration, and associated schedule dependencies.
  • Support change management activities, including impact assessments and documentation updates.
  • Interface with systems engineering, integration, and contractor teams to ensure documentation alignment with program requirements.
  • Support milestone preparation by ensuring required products are complete, accurate, and properly approved.
  • Provide written and verbal status updates on document processing, board actions, and GFE tracking.
  • Perform other duties as required in support of Multi-Purpose Habitation objectives.


Qualifications:

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, Physics, or related technical discipline from an ABET-accredited institution with 5 years of direct engineering experience; OR Master’s degree with 3 years of experience; OR PhD with 1 years of experience.
  • Experience supporting engineering configuration management, change processing, or technical product control activities within a complex technical or aerospace development program.
  • Experience preparing, coordinating or processing engineering products (e.g., requirements documents, interface control documents, verification documentation, or technical data packages) through formal technical review or approval processes.
  • Experience supporting control boards, technical interchange meetings (TIMs), or milestone review preparation activities.
  • Ability to interpret engineering documentation and coordinate technical inputs across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience supporting requirements traceability, verification documentation, or technical product lifecycle control.
  • Ability to track actions, assess impacts of proposed changes, and coordinate resolution with responsible engineering organizations.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to technical detail with the ability to manage multiple engineering product and schedules simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate technical status clearly through written documentation and status briefings. Proficiency with standard engineering documentation and collaboration tools. (e.g., Microsoft Office suite or equivalent).


Preferences:

  • Experience supporting human-rated aerospace development programs.
  • Familiarity with NASA configuration management processes and formal review boards.
  • Experience supporting change package processing and documentation lifecycle control.
  • Experience tracking Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) and supporting cross-program exchanges via the Moon-to-Mars Agreement Exchange (MAX) tool.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering documentation (ConOps, requirements, V&V documentation).
  • Working knowledge of configuration management tools or document control systems.
  • Experience working in cross-organizational, international partner, and/or multi-contractor environments.


Essential Functions

Work Environment:

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<10%)

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
