We have an exciting opportunity for a Propulsion Engineer - Rocket Components to join the team.

The Propulsion Engineer - Rocket Components will:

  • Reports NASA JSC EP4 Branch
  • Extensive knowledge in component and system certification and the impacts of component design and operating environment on certification
  • Provides support to national and international customers for Gateway and International Space, visiting vehicles, and Commercial Crew customers
  • Extensive knowledge in the design and development of major elements of ground test and space flight systems required to demonstrate the utilization of propulsion and fluid systems
  • Writes technical and progress reports covering assigned tasks which are made available to other technical groups and agencies
  • Understands Fluid Systems
  • Resolves unique or novel problems, conditions, and issues as related to Propulsion Subsystems
  • Provide support for flight Anomaly Resolution review and In-Flight Investigation review, capable of solving propulsion questions with low levels of information
  • Perform other duties as required


Requisition Qualifications:



    This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

    • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
    • Self-starting individual that does not require frequent significant direction/instruction. Individual is expected to be integral part of the NASA propulsion team, able to provide independent technical review assessments.
      • Experience level: 2 years (min) in relevant engineering discipline.
      • Assists Boeing team lead with day to day team activities such as mtg coverage and technical reviews.
      • (Propulsion Team Tracker) Review, track and present weekly status on all Prop-related pending document reviews and Actions (Flight Specific):
      • Includes: Acceptance Data Packages (ADPs), Qual Reports, ECB CRs, PMRBs, VCN, Variances, PAAs, Boeing NCRs, Hazard Reports/STRBs, Software Changes, and all Action Items needed to certify CST-100 for flight. Coordinate/track NASA Prop team reviews of all required assigned documents and actions.
      • Coordinate with NASA Test & Verification lead on all required NASA prop team document reviews and actions, e.g., via JIRA system.
    • Prop Team POC for all CST-100 Propulsion PAAs and PAA Forum. This includes any changes/creation/modifications of PAAs.
    • Serve as POC for software-related propulsion changes:
      • Maintain a current listing of all propulsion-related software changes.
      • Evaluate or delegate evaluation of the changes, prior to each flight.
    • Maintain close coordination with NASA Software team and track all assigned actions, e.g., JIRA system.
      • Serve as NASA Prop team POC for propulsion Hazard Reports reviews and STRB support.
    • As part of CFT COFR, all Propulsion Hazard Report Controls and Verifications are independently evaluated to ensure all closure artifacts, including software and firmware, met the intent of the requirements.
      • OMAC ATP hotfire video reviews for characterization of emissions (i.e. id any out of family)
    • Support mission Prop Console operations, both Simulations and Flight support
      • Generate/Maintain Console Smart Book
      • Flt data review (JMEWs)


    Requisition Preferences:

    • Propulsion experience (preferred) or fluid systems experience
    • Flight program experience
    • Maintain an up-to-date schedule for the following on-going projects: SM2 Prop Harvesting at WSTF, Include status by component, location, future plans, ATP Hot Fire at WSTF, Include status by thruster S/N, location, future plans, OMAC Filter Testing @ MSFC, RCS Thruster dQual and additional testing driven In-Flight Anomalies
    • Flight data review via MATLAB scripts (requires MATLAB coding capability)
    • CAD software modeling capability, e.g., Creo
    • Analytical modeling capability/experience (EASY5, SINDA/FLUENT, ANSYS/FEA)

    Essential Functions

    Work Environment

    Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

    Physical Requirements

    Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

    Equipment and Machines

    Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

    Attendance

    Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
