Railroad Maintenance Worker

Installs and repairs railroad track using portable grinder, spike puller, spike driver and tie adz to grind ends of rails, remove old spikes, drive new spikes, cut ties to fit fishplates and perform related maintenance. Operates single- or multiple-head spike- driving machines to drive spikes into ties and secure rails. Raises rail using hydraulic jack to facilitate removal of old ties and installation of new ties. Operates rail saw to cut rails to specified lengths. Sprays ties, fishplates, and joints with oil to protect them from weather. Repairs or adjusts track switches, using wrenches and replacement parts. Patrols assigned track sections so that damaged or broken track can be located and reported. Observes leveling indicator arm to verify levelness and alignment of tracks. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • High School Education or equivalent.
  • Must have 2 years or more verifiable “hands on” experience as journey-level railroad maintenance worker.
  • Must have 1 year or more verifiable “hands on” experience in railroad trackage inspection and recertify every 5 years.
  • Must possess a valid state drivers’ license.
  • Must have and wear hard-toed safety shoes which meet ASTM F2413-05 standards when entering industrial areas.
  • Successful candidate will be subject to a government security investigation and must continually meet eligibility requirements for access to all areas of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.
