MWR Technician - Referee

Amentum is seeking a Referee to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Referee will be responsible for supporting the operation of MWR sports and recreation programs by officiating athletic events, ensuring fair play, enforcing game rules, and promoting a safe environment for participants. This position will serve as an impartial official during sporting events, demonstrate sound judgement, and contribute to the success of MWR recreational activities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Officiate recreational and competitive sporting events in accordance with established rules and regulations.
  • Interpret and consistently enforce the rules of the assigned sport while maintaining fairness and impartiality.
  • Make timely and accurate decisions during athletic competitions.
  • Inspect playing areas, equipment, and facilities to ensure safe conditions before and during events.
  • Communicate effectively with coaches, players, spectators, and event staff to maintain order and sportsmanship.
  • Resolve conflicts professionally while maintaining control of the game.
  • Monitor participants conduct and enforce safety standards and MWR policies.
  • Maintain required officiating certifications and participate in continuing education to remain current on Rule changes and best practices.
  • Assist with the coordination and execution of MWR sports leagues, tournaments, and special events as needed.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to participants and patrons.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.

RequirementsRequired Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience coordinating organized team sports, recreation club activities, or social event scheduling required.
  • Prior experience as a player, coach, or sports official preferred.
  • Previous MWR or Armed Forces recreation experience preferred.
  • Strong verbal communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent decision-making skills with the ability to remain impartial under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a recreation team.
  • Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
  • Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
  • Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. 
  • Employees must read, speak, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, run, and remain physically active for extended periods during athletic events.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, holiday, and varying shiftsbased on recreation schedules.

Working Environment

This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.

Physical Requirements

 Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
