The COMET contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development and Operations, and the Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an Ocean Engineer in support of NASA’s Landing and Recovery Team.
  • Provide a fundamental understanding of applied marine hydrodynamics to support space capsule recovery.
  • Apply knowledge of directional wave spectrum to understand and interpret ship motion models to advise space capsule recovery.
  • Process, analyze, and reduce load cell, accelerometer, and pressure transducer data gathered during offshore training missions.
  • Author formal technical test reports and analyses.
  • Provide other technical engineering direction for the Mechanical Analysis department including design, analysis, implementation, and operational support.
  • Depending on the project type, tasks can vary between conceptual design, revisions to existing designs, and/or modifications to existing structures or Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
  • Review and provide comment to engineering models, methodologies, and deliverables from colleagues within, and occasionally outside, the Mechanical Analysis department.
  • Troubleshoot equipment/system anomalies using available data and/or testing results.
  • Successfully interface with the NASA customer and other client representatives by supporting or presenting at a variety of Engineering Review Boards.
  • Manage completion of tasks on-schedule and within budget to the customer's satisfaction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or technical equivalent from an accredited institution; at least 10 years of experience and/or advanced degree.

  • This is a mid-level engineering position with a required ten (10) or more years of relevant analysis experience within the discipline of Ocean Engineering; MS is preferred.
  • Main skillsets concentrated in Ocean Engineering, ocean waves, ship motions, and hydrostatics.
  • Practical knowledge of applicable ASME, ASTM, Shore Protection Manual, or other relevant industry standards is desired.
  • Proficient expertise in the use of standard industry numerical calculation packages, such as MATLAB, Mathematica, and/or Mathcad is required.
  • Breadth of technical expertise to include ship hydromechanics, wave dynamics, and marine meteorology.
  • Fundamental understanding of ship motion, tank sloshing, and breaking wave dynamics is highly preferred.
  • Ability to perform complex hand calculations is required.
  • With limited guidance, must be capable of utilizing engineering concepts and advanced analysis techniques in order to gather data and write technical dispositions to bring systems/structures to their desired working fidelity.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, presentation, and customer interface skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Must be well organized, flexible, and capable of effectively prioritizing several multidisciplinary tasks.
  • Inherently self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and able to work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, if necessary.


Physical Requirements:

- Will be required to climb stairs in order to access equipment for trouble shooting.

- Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection, and other associated personal protective equipment.

- Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.

- Physical requirements are: sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.

- Position is located on a hazardous testing facility; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in the event of an emergency.

Work Environment:

- Will be required to work inside and outside throughout the test complex.

- Position may require travel to different areas on Kennedy Space Center property.

- Position may require travel to US Naval Base San Diego and offshore travel in support of NASA recovery operations.

- Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations on the center.

- Climbing ladders and platforms may be necessary.

- All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and company safety standards.

Equipment and Machines:

- Computers and printers used for producing analyses, reports, and schedules.

- Variety of equipment used in testing.

Attendance:

- Full-time regular work hours between Monday-Friday. Three (3) days per week onsite required.

- Hybrid (Part-Time Remote) options available.

- Position may require occasional overtime, including weekend work, depending on the assigned task.

- Must be dependable and punctual.

- Shift work may be required.

Other Essential Functions:

- Must be able to accurately communicate ideas in writing and verbal correspondence.

- Must be able to travel to support position requirements. This may include travel to and from the customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can be made for POV, if necessary.

- Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

- Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions.

- Government security clearance may be required in the future.

- Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
