Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) is seeking a senior System Engineer with experience and knowledge of Navigation and Communication (Nav/Comm) for space flight missions. This system engineering specialist will be responsible for providing engineering services for the NASA Moon to Mars (M2M) Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) Office.
The M2M SE&I team is responsible for the integration of the Artemis missions that consists of the Space Launch System (SLS), Orion Spacecraft, ground systems and operations, payloads, the cis-Lunar Gateway platform, NASA Flight Operations Directorate, and in-space communication systems. Artemis is a series of missions to the Moon. The Nav/Comm Specialist will interact daily with the Integrated Communication and Navigation team to develop and maintain a Nav/Comm architecture that is capable of safely, effectively and efficiently meeting the Artemis mission objectives.
The primary responsibility of the Nav/Comm System Engineer is:
• Lead collaboration and decision making across Artemis segments to prepare for launch, launch of SLS, handoff of cargo to Orion, and transport of crew and cargo to the Moon with a safe return to Earth.
• Use their experience and knowledge to develop cross-program products and prepare inputs to segment products. A typical product is a communication and navigation architecture description document.
• Datamine, data analysis and reduction, trade studies, problem solving, and prepare reports. This also includes review of engineering products associated with Nav/Comm and related subject matter such as imagery, environments and electromagnetic effects, cybersecurity, interoperability, integrated test, and integrated avionics and software.
Other responsibilities include:
• Derive requirements, formulate verification approaches, assist with develop of concept-of-operations, collect and combine lessons learned from the missions, participate in risk management activities, and prepare inputs for plans.
• Coordination and collaboration with cross-program partners via leading working groups and technical interchange meetings, and briefing stakeholders at control board meetings.
• Ability to engage subject matter experts, technical integrators and managers.
• Capturing expert inputs and reporting to stakeholders and decision makers such as the M2M segments and the NASA Space Operations Mission Directorate (SOMD) Space Communication and Navigation Program. This will also include reporting to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Habitation Exploration and Development Office and ASED management.
Additional information on position
The overall task requires some knowledge of SLS and Orion, experience in systems engineering, a background in the field of communications and navigation, integration skills, and the ability to lead task activities. The position may require deriving requirements, review of requirement specifications, and building interface control documents. The leadership aspect of the job includes planning and organizing technical meetings, conducting effective meetings, strong skills in one or more engineering disciplines, driving change if needed with a focus on results, and ability to collaborate with SMEs of various skill levels and knowledge.
A degree in engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited school preferred.
• Ph.D., with minimum of 4 years of experience,
• MS with at least 8 years of experience, or
• BS with at least 10 years of experience.
The work requires excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills. This includes presentation skills and experience developing and delivering executive level briefings. The task requires the ability to work with little supervision and guidance, and a minimum of five years of system engineering experience. The job may require travel.

Essential Functions
Work Environment:
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Travel may be necessary, but infrequent (<5%)
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Requires sitting at a desk to write reports and perform engineering task activities (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and other facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer and other general office equipment 50%.
Attendance:
Normal workday is from 7:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Overtime during the week and weekends may be required to meet schedules (50% max). Attendance and being prompt is important to provide continuous service to the customer; adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences is required. Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory for meetings and other planned occasions. (100%).
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
