Role Title: Systems Engineering Safety Manager
Role Background and Scope:
Amentum has been tasked by Defence to source a range of specialist resources to provide support for the delivery of a range of patrol vessels, specialist ships, and maritime capabilities for the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Border Force, and partner nations. This includes:
- Delivering six Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Royal Australian Navy.
- Delivering a new sail training ship.
- Delivering twenty‑four Patrol Boats to Pacific and Indian Ocean partner nations under the Commonwealth’s Pacific Maritime Security Program.
- Delivering ten Patrol Boats for the Royal Australian Navy.
- Delivering up to eleven additional Patrol Boats for the Australian Border Force.
- Managing procurement of vessels and vessel‑like assets for Defence and other agencies.
- Supporting other tasking as directed by senior leadership.
Responsibilities:
The Systems Engineering Safety Manager will provide senior specialist systems safety leadership support to the Royal Australian Navy ensuring that Naval vessels are designed, delivered and transitioned into service safely in compliance with Australian legislation, Defence policy and naval seaworthiness requirements. This role leads the development and oversight of Safety Cases and supporting artefacts across multiple programs, harmonises system‑safety approaches enterprise‑wide, and acts as a trusted technical authority advising Navy, APS, ADF and industry stakeholders. This management position reviews engineering changes and contract deliverables for safety impact, drives issue resolution through informed risk‑based analysis, and mentors project teams to uplift safety capability, enabling confident delivery of naval capability within a continuous shipbuilding environment.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading the development of the Safety Case and supporting artefacts for capabilities being delivered to Navy
- Coordination across the delivery programs to ensure consistent approach to Systems Safety.
- Coordination across Navy, NSSG and other enterprise organisations and groups to ensure the project safety documentation and supporting evidence and artefacts are shared and updated between stakeholders
- Provision of advice and guidance on system safety engineering analysis techniques, processes, and assurance necessary for design and implementation
- Assessment and evaluation of performance against agreed plans and implement strategies to achieve required outcomes;
- Initiating the resolution of issues by identifying and developing solutions through analysis of alternative courses of action and their implications;
- Interpreting and ensuring compliance with legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
- Reviewing engineering change proposals and contract deliverables
- Providing guidance and mentoring to Project team members including APS and ADF to ensure knowledge transfer and enduring capability
Essential Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering (Systems/Mechanical/Electrical/Mechatronics/Naval Architecture)
- Demonstrated experience in supporting maritime acquisition projects
- Familiarity with Defence Seaworthiness management System and associated regulatory requirements
- Proven long term practical application as a systems engineering specialist within Maritime (ideally Defence)
- Solid knowledge and application of Risk Management Principles - ISO 31000
- Recognition as a delegation authority ensuring governance requirements
Desirable Requirements:
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng/NER) or equivalent professional standing
- Formal Systems Safety Engineering Training
