CFD Analysis Engineer

Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL (Ranked #1 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News 2022). ASED has been a primary contractor for NASA since 1989 and supports marquee NASA programs, including the Space Launch System, International Space Station, space optics fabrication, earth and space sciences and advanced propulsion system development. Position Description:

This position will provide Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis support to the Aerosciences branch (EV33) in the Structural Design and Analysis Division (EV30) at MSFC’s Spacecraft and Vehicle Systems Department. CFD team applies engineering expertise to the design and development launch vehicles and landers by providing analysis vital to the mission success.

Responsibilities:

Specific support to be provided includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Generate meshes for geometrically complex launch vehicles.

• Setup and perform simulations of launch vehicle external aerodynamics, heating, and plume environments.

• Post-process CFD solutions to identify areas of concern, draw conclusions regarding aerodynamic and aerothermal environments.

• Apply engineering techniques and procedures to analyze and evaluate specific problems, data, or other work features that are broad in scope and complexity.

• Review and evaluate the quantity, quality, and overall adequacy of results and conclusions drawn from various engineering tasks.

• Prepare and present analyses results to technical teams and review boards.

• Develop and deliver analyses products, documents, presentations, and action item responses.

• Participate in reviews, meetings, teleconferences, and working groups.

• Communicate issues, best practices, lessons-learned and other technical positions related to aerothermal analyses.

• Identify, describe, and communicate potential risks.

• Deliver project briefings to all levels of management.

• Provide clear and effective communication with internal and external partners and stakeholders.

Here's What You'll Need:

A degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with 0 - 5 years (or Master’s with 0 - 3 years) of relevant experience.

• Experience in theoretical/computational analyses of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and aerodynamics of space transportation vehicles.

• Experience using CFD mesh generation packages.

• Experience with high-fidelity CFD software.

• Experience with programming languages such as Python, FORTRAN, MATLAB and their application to modeling and simulation.

• Knowledge of space transportation vehicle design, functions, terminology, interfaces, technical disciplines, and system design.

• Familiarity with command line interfaces and the Linux operating system.

• Familiarity with managing large datasets and extracting data to find out and communicate trends in data.

• Self-motivated, proactive, and effective team players with customer relations skills, familiar with working in a dynamic work environment.

• Interest in optimizing and improving existing analytical tools and processes to efficiently provide analysis results.

• Ability to be flexible and easily refocus on tasks when task directions or requirements change.

• Ability to interface and collaborate with all levels of engineering and project management with the ability to lead and influence for consensus.

• Demonstrated experience building strong working relationships with multiple stakeholders, organizing, and facilitating meetings/technical discussions.

• Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams & Outlook) are required.

• Excellent written and oral technical communication skills, with the ability to clearly define and describe a technical subject to peers across various engineering disciplines.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%)

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to perform engineering tasks and write reports (85%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (5%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

A REAL ID-compliant license/ID or another acceptable form of identification to access federal facilities. The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
