Role Description:

The Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) is seeking a skilled GIS Foundation Specialist for an initial 12‑month contract to support delivery of assured and trusted Foundation Geospatial data, services, and products across Defence. This role will contribute to the production, maintenance, and continuous improvement of high-quality geospatial data and cartographic outputs, ensuring alignment with Defence operational and strategic requirements in an increasingly complex geospatial environment.

The Foundation Geospatial Branch (FGB) is responsible for producing authoritative foundation geospatial data for Defence activities, including standardised datasets and products such as maps, imagery, elevation, and feature data essential for planning and operations.

The GIS Foundation Specialist will provide the capability to deliver complex geospatial data production, quality assurance, and foundation geospatial data outputs, ensuring that Foundation GEOINT remains accurate, consistent, and aligned to Defence standards and operational needs. The role will operate under limited direction and contribute to the effective delivery and sustainment of enterprise geospatial capabilities.

Foundation Geospatial data underpins Defence decision-making through authoritative, standardised datasets and products, including mapping, imagery, elevation, and feature data essential for planning and operations. The successful candidate will bring demonstrated experience in geospatial data production, quality assurance, and GIS analysis, operating under limited direction to deliver complex technical outputs and support enterprise geospatial capabilities.

Candidates should hold a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience, typically with 5+ years in GIS or a related field, and the ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver complex geospatial data production, extraction, and maintenance activities in accordance with Defence standards and specifications.
  • Perform quality assurance and validation of spatial data, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency of Foundation Geospatial datasets.
  • Produce cartographic products and visualisations to meet defined operational and technical requirements.
  • Support the integration and sustainment of Foundation Geospatial data within enterprise GIS environments.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of geospatial production workflows, standards, and processes.
  • Provide technical advice and support to stakeholders on geospatial data, tools, and methodologies.
  • Assist in the preparation of documentation, including quality reports, procedures, and technical outputs.
  • Support capability development activities through the application of geospatial analysis and data management practices aligned to future Defence requirements.

Essential Requirements:

The position requires an experienced Level 3 GIS practitioner with strong technical capability in geospatial data creation, manipulation, and validation, supported by a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience and typically 5+ years working in GIS or a related field.

The role requires proficiency in GIS tools (such as ArcGIS and/or SOCET GXP), experience working with complex data schemas, quality assurance practices, and the ability to produce cartographic outputs to specification, alongside strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to manage assigned work independently, deliver complex outputs to required standards, and maintain compliance with established policies, with Defence or government experience and the ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance highly desirable.

This position requires a skilled professional with strong stereo acuity to support advanced geomatic/photogrammetry workflows and high‑precision geospatial imaging systems. The role may involve detailed analysis and interpretation of stereoscopic imagery within GIS environments to produce accurate spatial data and mapping products. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong visual depth perception, technical proficiency in geospatial tools, and a high level of precision when performing complex imaging and data production tasks.

  • Demonstrated experience (5+ years) in GIS data production, analysis, and quality assurance within enterprise or Defence-style environments.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in geospatial science, GIS, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong proficiency in GIS tools (e.g. ArcGIS/SOCET GXP) for feature extraction (2D and 3D), analysis, production and data management.
  • Experience working with complex data schemas and producing data to defined specifications and standards.
  • Demonstrated capability in geospatial data quality assurance, validation, and reporting.
  • Ability to produce cartographic, or other foundation geospatial datasets or products to a specification, including map design and presentation standards.
  • Ability to work under limited direction, manage assigned tasks independently, and deliver complex outputs to required time, cost, and quality targets.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Understanding of Defence, intelligence, or government operating environments (desirable).

Desirable Requirements:

  • Strong capability in applying geospatial standards, data governance, and quality assurance frameworks.
  • Experience in analysing and resolving complex geospatial data issues using established methods and tools.
  • Ability to support continuous improvement and optimisation of geospatial production workflows.
  • Understanding of interoperability and integration across geospatial systems and data environments.
  • Awareness of emerging GIS technologies and their application to Defence geospatial capability development.

Salary Range Depending on Experience: $160,000 - $182,500 base
