Amentum is seeking a highly organized and safety‑driven Hazardous Waste Specialist to support chemical and radioactive material management for facilities in the Washington, DC area. This role is responsible for developing and implementing programs that ensure the safe handling, storage, transport, and disposal of hazardous and radioactive materials.

The specialist also conducts routine inspections to ensure employees and operations comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations and guidelines, helping maintain a safe and compliant workplace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain programs for the safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of chemical and radioactive materials.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Monitor hazardous waste streams and ensure proper labeling, storage, and documentation.
  • Coordinate hazardous waste shipments and disposal activities with approved vendors.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant records for hazardous material inventories, manifests, and disposal logs.
  • Train personnel on proper handling procedures, regulatory requirements, and emergency response protocols.
  • Assist in environmental audits and regulatory reviews.
  • Identify safety risks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support spill response, cleanup activities, and mitigation procedures when necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Hazardous Waste Specialist or in hazardous materials management.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations (e.g., EPA, RCRA, DOT, OSHA).
  • Experience managing hazardous or radioactive materials in a compliance‑driven environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent record‑keeping skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT)

Preferred Qualifications

  • HAZWOPER 40‑hour certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience working in federal, Department of State (DOS), or high‑security facilities.
  • Familiarity with waste tracking software or environmental data systems.
  • Additional certifications related to hazardous materials or environmental compliance.

       

Compensation Details:

$115,000-$122,000

       

The compensation range or hourly rate listed for this position is provided as a good-faith estimate of what the company intends to offer for this role at the time this posting was issued. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws.
