Job Description

As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

As part of your time with Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED), you will participate in ES34’s Avionics Systems Development Activity.

You will work with digital hardware and logic designers to integrate a sensor onto a custom designed carrier card to interface with an FPGA development card. You will also assist ES34 designers with other active projects within the branch.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist digital design engineers with the electrical schematic and component layout of printed circuit boards

  • Assist in electronic parts selection

  • Assist in creating parts kit for assembly or printed circuit board

  • Assist logic designer in architecture and implementation of VHDL logic

  • Assist in setup of laboratory for testing

  • Assist team members in functional testing of printed circuit boards and system

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure products meet performance goals

  • Provide weekly written and oral status reports in a meeting setting

  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications:

The educational requirement is enrollment in a university or college program leading to a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field. Must have completed your sophomore year of studies and maintained a good academic standing with at least a 3.0 GPA.  An ABET accredited program is preferred.

  • Must be able to provide own transportation.

  • Proper ‘STAR-ID’ driver’s license for registration and admittance to Redstone Arsenal is required.

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with electrical schematic entry and printed circuit board layout tools

  • Familiarity with logic design in VHDL or Verilog

  • Strong written and oral technical communication skills – must be able to clearly define and describe a technical subject to peers across various engineering disciplines

  • Strong task organization skills – ability to self-manage multiple tasks competing for time and attention, and achieve need dates for all assigned tasks

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Essential Functions

 

Work Environment

Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<5%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (20%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (70%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%). 

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workdays are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
