The Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) Manufacturing Producibility Engineer will support the production of the Space Launch System (SLS) vehicle. Most of the work will be on-site at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center but some travel (expected to be less than 20%) will be required to support production at Michoud Assembly Facility and Kennedy Space Center.


Position responsibilities include:

  • Review production plans and provide guidance and recommendations as necessary to facilitate the production of the SLS.

  • Participate in production planning meetings and provide guidance and recommendations to the production leads and project office leadership to facilitate the production of the SLS.

  • Review drawings for producibility, redline as necessary and approve as appropriate.

  • Review facilities modifications and provide recommendations regarding producibility and workflow.

  • Review tooling designs for machining and fabrication and provide recommendations to optimize producibility.

Qualifications

Degree in industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited university. Typically, educational and experience requirements are the equivalent of a BS with 25 years’ experience, MS with 23 years’ experience or Ph.D. with 19 years’ experience. Candidates with up to 5 years less experience or more experience than typical (shown above) will receive consideration for this position.

The candidate is required to have outstanding technical and leadership qualifications in one or more of the following areas:

  • Experience with performing and/or supervising manufacturing processes including tool design, machining, welding and equipment maintenance.

  • Experience with performing and/or supervising metal processes including heat treating and hot isostatic pressing.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Technical leadership in aerospace disciplines

  • Highly organized with demonstrated skills to simultaneously coordinate and work multiple projects to full completion.

  • Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID.

It is desirable for the candidate to have:

  • Experience specking-out and purchasing manufacturing equipment.

  • Experience working for NASA supporting the Space Launch System.

  • Experience with project management.

  • Experience with process control and risk mitigation.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

It is expected that work will primarily be performed on-site at MSFC in office and laboratory environments with minimal telework at home possible (<10%). Requires the ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires the ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<20%).

Physical Requirements

 Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (30%). Also requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to stand, walk and use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA facilities (30%).

Equipment and Machines

 Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, copier, calculator, and other general office and laboratory equipment.

Attendance

 Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal paid overtime may be required to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

 The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
