This opportunity will provide systems engineering and system-level integration support to MSFC for the Space Launch System (SLS) Spacecraft Payload Integration Element as part of the MSFC Systems Requirements and Verification Branch (EV72) in the MSFC Systems Engineering and Integration Division (EV70).
The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, systems elements, and the SPIE Lead Systems Engineer, participating in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. The candidate will supply support for the development and maturity of key systems engineering products including System Functional Analysis, Element Requirements, Verification Products, Flight Evaluation products, and will support program/project milestones.
The candidate will support the development and definition of interfaces for the sub-elements and interfaces between Integrated Spacecraft and Payload Element (ISPE) sub-elements, other SLS vehicle elements, and the Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) and Orion spacecraft programs.
Responsibilities:
Specific support that will be provided and performed by the candidate includes:
- Support the definition and development of flight evaluation strategies and flight data analysis tasks (FDAs), including the resulting data gathering via console operations during prelaunch testing and launch countdown of SLS, and compiling and submittal of report information.
- Support the development of key systems engineering products to include System Requirements that support program/project milestones and the subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured, to include support of the development of digital engineering tools used to manage requirements, verification, and flight evaluation activities.
- Support the SPIE integrated element architecture development and maintenance of the SPIE internal interfaces specification, the SPIE side of the SPIE-to-Core Stage specification, and the SPIE side of the External Program interfaces (EGS and Orion)
- Provide direct communication and coordination with the SPIE ELSE and Alternate ELSE to support coordination and management of the integrated element architecture, including planning and execution of milestone reviews.
- Identify, describe, and communicate potential risks related to the products, processes and interactions in the systems engineering processes and document them in the NASA Risk Management System
Qualifications:
A degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering or related field required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a master’s with at least one total year of relevant experience or a BS with at least three total years of relevant experience. Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID.
The candidate is required to have:
Demonstrated experience working across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to identify requirements and resolve vehicle/propulsion systems integration issues.
Personnel should have experience related to complex systems end-to-end development ranging from requirements development, functional design, hardware integration and verification that will ultimately lead to aerospace systems design certification, and an understanding of flight evaluation tasking and reporting.

Excellent oral, written, and customer relation skills, and be proficient using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

The presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as distinguishing factors in selecting applicants:
Background consistent with aerospace systems requirements definition, functional design, or design integration.
An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS Element interfaces.
Experience in requirements development and maintenance through relational database management and an understanding of digital engineering tools.
Essential Functions
Work Environment:
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:
Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
