Come join our team on the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract whose work is destined to have a long-range effect on future generations.  The Thrust Vector Control Systems Integration and Components Development Propulsion Team is seeking a TVC Electromechanical Technician. 

The position requires hands-on experience in assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and fabrication in support of the Thrust Vector Control Test Laboratory, including hydraulic system operations, tube fitting, welding, machinery operation, and development activities. The selected candidate will also support knowledge transfer and overlap with existing laboratory technician support. The position will require the following:

  • Work directly with engineering personnel and/or higher-level technicians on the design, fabrication, installation, and operation of components and special systems.
  • Perform skilled work in the development, fabrication, calibration, setup, operation and maintenance of laboratory test stands, equipment, and facilities.
  • Fabricate, modify, and assemble various complex hardware and systems from engineering drawings, sketches, or verbal and written instructions.
  • Build and operate complex mechanical systems and equipment within the functional scope of assigned group/section including, but not limited to, pressure (liquid/vapor/gas), cryogenic, hydraulic, pneumatic test equipment and systems.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions in order to carry out assignments.
  • Review electrical schematics and fabricate cables.
  • Operate forklift and man-lift equipment in the performance of work assignments as required.
  • Work at elevated locations using systems/equipment such as ladders, man-lifts, scaffolding, and other work platforms.
  • Operate appropriate shop mechanical equipment, systems, and tools in the performance of work duties.
  • Cut, flare, thread, and bend tubing and pipe in the assembly of both high- and low-pressure liquid, vapor, and gas systems.
  • Clean hardware and components to the appropriate level prior to, during, and after assembly using established procedures and specifications.
  • Perform testing and leak checking of TVC hardware and pressure systems.
  • Maintain equipment as necessary, including preventive maintenance and repairs or replacement of parts.
  • Execute all work duties in a skilled, safe, and technically proficient manner.
  • Execute all assigned tasks with technical guidance and/or supervision from higher-level technicians, engineers, or a supervisor.
  • Wear and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing during performance of work duties, to include safety glasses/goggles, hard hats, gloves, masks, respirators, coveralls, harnesses, etc.
  • Identify and correct potential hazards and/or unsafe acts/conditions at the work site.
  • Notify Supervisor and Management of any hazards in the workplace and advise on potential corrective actions.
  • Maintain work area in a neat, orderly, and safe condition.

The selected candidate will work integrally with ESSCA Group, customer engineers, and engineering technicians as needed to perform training and work assignments including, but not limited to:

  • Perform training assignments designed to develop professional working knowledge and abilities.
  • Follow standard work methods on recurring assignments and receive explicit instructions on unfamiliar assignments.
  • Technical adequacy of routine work is reviewed on completion and non-routine work may be reviewed in progress.
  • Receive on-the-job training in the engineering and scientific fields to utilize tools as required.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to assist with the work of others.
  • Proficient operational experience in standard and complex mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Proficient knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures within the assigned work area.

Qualifications: 

Typically, the educational requirement is a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent with technical training in the applicable area of expertise and a minimum of 4 years of related experience, or an Associate's degree.

  • Experience in mechanical and electronic hardware assembly and test.
  • Must be able to follow work instructions, interpret engineering drawings and electrical schematics, and follow stringent work area rules and safety protocols.
  • Self-motivated, team player familiar with working in a dynamic work environment.
  • Experience with cable fabrication, cable routing, and cable testing is highly desired.
  • Familiar with NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Standard.
  • Performing mechanical fabrication and assembly based on verbal or written input, and performing troubleshooting of hardware installations is highly desired.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain certifications for various activities such as Overhead Crane/Hoist, Program Critical Hardware/Manual Move, Electrostatic Discharge, Scissor Lift, Aerial Platform and Forklift Operations.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in metal fabrication and welding.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) on a standard PC.
  • Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID.

Physical Requirements

  • Duties may include the handling of hazardous waste and transportation of hazardous waste (if qualified).
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Ability to distinguish between colors (e.g., blue and green wires).
  • Ability to comply with safety policies and requirements.
  • Ability to use limbs with 90% range.
  • Must use safety protective equipment where required.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, towers, and stairs.
  • Will require physical exertion in climbing, lifting, squatting, crawling, carrying, or critical work in cramped quarters.

Work Environment

  • All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and Company safety standards. 
  • Work will be mainly performed in an inside environment, but fieldwork can be a combination of inside and outside depending on the project.
  • Working at heights is required and in confined spaces may be required.

Equipment and Machines

  • Operate and maintain handling equipment such as forklifts (up to 20K) and other area specific Material Handling Equipment.
  • Operate computer terminals, personal computers, and related computer peripheral equipment to maintain/adjust database logs and records, print documents and record work performance.
  • Personal computer, scanner, copy machine, telephone, laser printer, fax machine and other office equipment including desk supplies.

Attendance

  • Work assignments are normally 10-hour shifts, 4 consecutive days per week.
  • Must be dependable and punctual.
  • Occasional overtime, sometimes with short notice, is required to meet demanding schedules.

Other Essential Functions

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain certifications required for operating Material Handling Equipment.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • Must comply with all “drug-free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions.

Must pass all applicable physicals required for this position.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
