The Thrust Vector Control (TVC) Systems Integration and Components Development team is seeking a Electrical/Electromechanical Engineer. This position will provide senior-level electrical and electromechanical engineering support for laboratory activities, test preparation, test execution, hardware integration, troubleshooting, data analysis, and technical coordination. The engineer will support assigned NASA and ASED team members in laboratory and propulsion-related work, including thrust vector control (TVC), electromechanical components, controllers, instrumentation, data acquisition, and related test systems.

Activities may include but not be limited to:

  • Provide senior-level electrical and electromechanical engineering support to the Propulsion Department’s laboratory and test activities.
  • Lead or coordinate design, integration, checkout, troubleshooting, and evaluation of electromechanical components, controllers, actuators, instrumentation, and related test systems.
  • Provide senior TVC and electromechanical actuator/controller support, including development, verification, troubleshooting, launch or test support, and evaluation as applicable.
  • Develop, evaluate, and improve control strategies for electromechanical systems, including feedback control loops, software interfaces, system response, and control parameter tuning.
  • Plan and coordinate electrical test setups, data acquisition, sensors/transducers, signal conditioning, wiring, cable/interface definition, and laboratory troubleshooting.
  • Evaluate requirements, hardware and software configurations, performance characteristics, test procedures, and test results; provide technical comments and recommended dispositions.
  • Coordinate with engineers, technicians, customers, and vendors to support fabrication, integration, test preparation, test execution, issue resolution, and workload prioritization.
  • Participate in or lead anomaly and failure investigation activities; identify, document, and pursue resolution of technical issues.
  • Create or review specifications for in-house and purchased hardware, and support vendor/supplier coordination as needed.
  • Support development and review of test plans and participate in testing for development, qualification, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Analyze test and flight data, create performance reports, and deliver results with recommendations.
  • Provide periodic status updates to program, task, and team leadership, and mentor or guide less-experienced engineers and technicians as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Degree in Engineering or related (STEM) field from an ABET-accredited university is required.  Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a master’s degree with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience.

Required Experience / Skills:

Experience in the following areas:

  • Senior-level electrical or electromechanical engineering experience in a laboratory, test, aerospace, propulsion, or similar technical environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan, organize, and execute engineering tasks; determine project objectives and requirements; and develop approaches for diverse technical activities.
  • Experience providing technical direction, mentoring, guidance, workload coordination, or review of work performed by engineers, technicians, or support personnel.
  • Design, integration, test, troubleshooting, or evaluation of electromechanical components, controllers, avionics, power systems, pumps, mechanisms, instrumentation, or related hardware.
  • Instrumentation, data acquisition, signal conditioning, wiring/cable interfaces, sensors/transducers, and electrical test setup planning and troubleshooting.
  • Expertise with system dynamics, modeling system response, and tuning control parameters for optimal performance.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication, integration processes, and quality control techniques relative to components, tubes, avionics, instrumentation, and/or welded hardware.
  • Experience with development, verification, qualification, validation, or troubleshooting testing of aerospace or complex technical components; ability to communicate technical issues, reports, results, and recommendations clearly.
  • Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID

Desired Experience / Skills:

  • Working knowledge of component design for thrust vector control systems such as actuators, mechanisms, valves, bellows, tubes, latches, pressurized components, or aerospace hardware.
  • Knowledge of NASA, aerospace, or relevant industry design, construction, safety, and test standards.
  • Experience with launch vehicle, propulsion, ground cryogenic, pressure, hydraulic, pneumatic, or test facility systems.
  • Experience with LabVIEW, MATLAB, Simulink, WinPlot, data acquisition systems, test automation, or related engineering tools.
  • Experience with 3D CAD programs; Creo experience is preferred.
  • Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Experience with electrical troubleshooting, cable fabrication/routing/testing, PLCs, controllers, or field-programmable devices.
  • Excellent technical writing, coordination, presentation, and customer-interface skills.

Travel:

•           Up to 10% of time.

Essential Functions

Work Environment: 

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%).  Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).  

Equipment and Machines: 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: 

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.  Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. 

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
