Duties and Responsibilities:

The fire alarm and suppression mechanic performs a variety of life safety trade functions that relate to both fire alarm and fire suppression.

Fire alarm related duties include activities such as the installation, maintenance, or repair of equipment related to fire alarm systems, networks, and devices. Work involves most of the following: installing or repairing any of a variety of equipment such as smoke detectors, pull stations, mass notification devices, strobes, tamper switches, fire alarm control panels, UPS batteries, and associated wiring; working from blueprints, drawings, layouts, or other specifications, locating and diagnosing troubles/alarms in the fire alarm system or equipment, working standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment, and using a variety of electrician's hand tools and measuring and testing instruments.

Fire suppression related duties include activities such as fire sprinkler repair, inspection, and testing. Mechanic must have experience with backflow preventers, fire pumps, sprinkler heads, water flow and switches; and complete knowledge of wet and dry fire sprinkler systems and the ability to perform basic service and troubleshooting. Mechanic should also be proficient in identifying code issues and non-conformance issues. Duties may also include installing fire sprinkler systems.

There will be a large testing requirement as part of the preventative maintenance schedule for all devices as well as response to system troubles that will require flexible hours when necessary.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years' minimum experience in fire alarm/suppression field
  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Ability to lift up to 45 lbs.
  • Computer Skills - Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) preferred.
