Amentum is looking for a General Maintenance Technician (Mechanical) to join our #pecan team!

Essential Responsibilities:

The General Maintenance Technician (Mechanical) performs maintenance, repair, and service tasks related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration systems. This role requires technical expertise, familiarity with HVAC principles and tools, and the ability to follow detailed instructions and interpret engineering and blueprint diagrams. The technician is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of commercial and industrial HVAC systems and equipment. Primary responsibilities include:

  • HVAC System Maintenance & Repair:
    • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of HVAC and refrigeration systems, including air conditioners, furnaces, air handling units, chillers, compressors, and condensers.
    • Troubleshoot HVAC equipment to diagnose and resolve system malfunctions efficiently and effectively.
    • Assemble and disassemble mechanical HVAC components for repair, calibration, or replacement.
  • System Installation & Operations:
    • Assist in the installation of HVAC and refrigeration equipment, ensuring all work adheres to specifications, codes, and safety standards.
    • Perform equipment testing and start-up to ensure proper functionality before system handover.
  • Tools & Equipment Operation:
    • Safely use and maintain HVAC-related tools and equipment, including gauges, vacuum pumps, refrigerant recovery systems, and other diagnostic tools.
    • Operate hand and power tools effectively to complete maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Blueprints, Specifications, & Instructions:
    • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical documents, and manufacturer instructions for installation, troubleshooting, or modification of HVAC systems.
    • Ensure work is completed accurately based on detailed specifications and instructions.
  • Preventative Maintenance:
    • Perform preventative maintenance tasks on HVAC systems to minimize equipment failures.
    • Monitor system performance, adjust settings, and implement corrective actions to optimize efficiency and reliability.
  • Compliance & Documentation:
    • Adhere to all local, state, and federal safety regulations, including HVAC codes and standards.
    • Maintain accurate records of system repairs, inspections, maintenance logs, and refrigerant usage to comply with environmental standards.
  • Team Collaboration & Communication:
    • Collaborate with engineering and maintenance teams to address complex repairs, share system knowledge, and coordinate work schedules.
    • Communicate system performance, issues, or recommendations clearly with supervisors and team members.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to:

  • Moving mechanical parts and pressurized systems.
  • Extreme temperatures (hot or cold) in mechanical rooms or outdoor work environments.
  • Wet, humid, and hazardous conditions caused by refrigerants, chemicals, and condensate during system inspections or repairs.
  • Exposure to vibration, loud machinery, and occasionally elevated workspace locations.

The position requires:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing ladders or scaffolding, and working in cramped or awkward spaces to access mechanical systems.
  • Lifting tools, equipment, and parts that may weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • Dexterity in handling HVAC tools and small components for precision work.
  • Vision abilities including close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for equipment inspections or blueprint reading.

Noise levels can range from moderate to loud depending on the work area, requiring periodic use of hearing protection.

Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the commercial or industrial HVAC trade performing service and maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of refrigeration and HVAC systems, including their operational principles and basic components.
  • Ability to identify basic facts and terms related to heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration principles and theories.
  • Proficiency with HVAC tools and equipment, including proper use and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of applicable hand and power tools required for HVAC system repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to perform troubleshooting on HVAC equipment to diagnose and correct malfunctions.
  • Familiarity with basic mathematical functions for calculations used in refrigeration and HVAC repair.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, operation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to interpret and follow blueprints, schematics, instructions, and specifications for HVAC equipment maintenance and operations.

Clearance Required (If Applicable):

  • TS/SCI with poly

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Years of Experience:

  • Two (2) years of experience in the commercial and/or industrial HVAC trade, with a focus on service and maintenance.

Required Certifications (If Needed):

  • Universal CFC Certification for refrigerant handling (required).
  • Additional HVAC-related certifications preferred (e.g., EPA Section 608 Technician Certification).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree, Technical Certification, or completion of an apprenticeship in HVAC/R systems or Mechanical Systems.
  • Experience working in mission-critical facilities, large-scale commercial buildings, or industrial plants.
  • Additional certifications such as NATE (North American Technician Excellence) or LEED credentials.
  • Familiarity with energy-efficient HVAC practices or Building Automation Systems (BAS).

       

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.

       

Compensation Details:

$50,000 to $100,000
