The Amentum JETS II contract seeks to fill a part-time Human in the Loop (HITL) Subject Matter Expert position in the NASA Crew and Thermal Systems Division as a part of the JETS II Operations & Test Department. This candidate must have knowledge in extreme environmental testing related to Human in the Loop and Life Support systems, as well as in the analytical tools and techniques applied to these activities.

As the Human in the Loop Subject Matter Expert, you will:

  • Conduct HITL hazards analyses to identify and mitigate risks in integrated test environments.
  • Perform pressure systems hazard evaluations and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Assess human physiological hazards and develop strategies to protect crew health during testing and operations.
  • Assist in developing and validating pre-breath protocols to prevent decompression sickness during EVA activities.
  • Analyze technical trades, design solutions, and products to identify safety or technical issues prior to testing.
  • Evaluate new systems for readiness and risk mitigation before test execution.
  • Provide expert consultation on close call and mishap processes, ensuring efficient resolution and closure.
  • Develop credible action plans for mishap and close call scenarios to uphold safety and compliance.
  • Oversee and review safety engineering deliverables, including hazard analyses, for completeness and compliance.
  • Mitigate operational risks by identifying potential hazards and implementing strategies that ensure mission success.

Requisition Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and may be expected to have a related master’s degree and normally possess 10-15 years of related experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Aerospace, Human Factors, or related field (Master's preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in management or supervisory roles with proven leadership in team coordination and resource planning.
  • Expertise in HITL hazards analysis, pressure systems, and physiological risk assessments.
  • Strong knowledge of NASA safety standards, mishap processes, and human spaceflight protocols.
  • Experience with pre-breath protocols for decompression sickness prevention and EVA safety. Proficiency in technical trade studies and design evaluations for safety-critical systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of safety and health regulations with a proactive approach to risk mitigation.
  • Ability to travel to Johnson Space Center as needed.

Requisition Preferences:

  • Advanced degree in Aerospace Engineering, Human Factors, or Safety Engineering.
  • Familiarity with Artemis program requirements and NASA testing environments.
  • Experience in System Safety or Risk Management.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high-demand testing environments with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with JSC organizational structure, protocols, and workflows.
  • Background in environmental/thermal vaccum testing, preferably with prior involvement in CTSD at JSC.
  • Experience with test chamber operations and spaceflight hardware.
  • Prior experience conducting tests involving human subjects.
  • Knowledge of JSC clinic standards for workforce certification.

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
