Position Description:

The Systems Engineer- Configuration Management position supports the NASA Space Launch System (SLS) Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) labs from Marshall Space Flight center in Huntsville Alabama. The HWIL labs include the System Integration and Test Facility (SITF), Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL), and multiple Software Development Facilities (SDFs) used to verify the integrated avionics and software systems for the SLS rocket. All labs and emulators include numerous complex real-time Software Models integrated with Electrical/Avionics systems to achieve detailed simulation of the SLS rocket.

The Systems Engineer – Configuration Manager will provide software repository configuration management using GIT, installation of software in the HWIL supported labs, and physical configuration audits (PCA) of hardware in the loop HWIL labs. A secondary function of this position will be to review and audit engineering documents and other functions of the group.

This position is responsible for providing services and support for the Software Systems Engineering Branch (ES51). This branch is responsible for the requirements, test, analysis, configuration management, systems engineering, and “day of launch” operations support for the Space Launch System (SLS) Integrated Avionics Test Facilities (IATF).  This engineering support will be conducted within an existing operational Government owned and managed facility housed at MSFC.

This is a senior level position. Activities associated with this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Installation of software on HWIL facilities.

  • Lead and execute Physical Configuration Audits (PCA). These audits verify all software and hardware are installed properly on HWIL facilities with the correct versions.

  • Lead and execute the configuration management responsibilities using GIT on the IATF software repository.

  • Communicate technical issues, risks, best practices and lessons-learned related to products, and technical positions.

  • Develop integrated schedules and other tracking mechanisms to manage engineering tasks.

  • Be an ambitious self-starter and product owner of configuration management and physical configuration audits.

  • Be willing to initiate contact with other groups and work to resolve problems.

  • Work well within a team environment.

  • Review and audit engineering documents

  • Write technical documents

  • Lead and coordinate meetings associated with the above tasks.

Qualifications

Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related STEM field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with 20 years or more experience or a MS with 18 years’ experience or a PHd with 15 years’ experience. Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID.

The following skills/experience are highly desirable:

  • Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) and software simulation environment.

  • Ability to perform hands-on integration and troubleshooting support including proficiency with basic lab hardware.

  • Experience with software installation in HWIL labs.

  • Experience performing physical configuration audits on NASA HWIL labs.

  • Expert knowledge with GIT.

  • Knowledge of HWIL systems, electrical hardware design, and software systems.

  • Knowledge of systems and software engineering best practices with a demonstrated proficiency in requirements verification, validation, and software simulation accreditation.

  • Experience with systems engineering collaboration and requirements management applications such as DOORS or DOORS Next Generation.

  • Knowledge of collaboration tools such as JIRA, Confluence, GitHub.

  • Ability to work as part of a team and as an individual contributor.

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office 365 Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams).

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills.

Essential Functions

Work Environment: 

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%).  Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).  

Equipment and Machines: 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: 

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.  Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. 

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
