As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

Position Description

Provide Space Launch System (SLS) systems engineering and integration support in the area of interface control, and Digital Engineering (DE) support to the MSFC Systems Requirements, Verification & Validation Branch (EV72).

The candidate will provide and perform the following tasks:

Work with the Requirements, Verification, & Validation (RV&V) Team to control / manage internal and external interfaces and implement Systems Engineering management strategies using digital engineering tools.

These implementations will facilitate management and maturation of key systems engineering products including Interface Control Documents, traces to requirements, verifications, validations, and documents that support program/project milestones.  The successful candidate will work with the EV72 engineers, document owners, and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop solutions that meet our customers’ needs.

Responsibilities:

Engineering support to be performed by the candidate includes:

  • Provide system functional design and integration support for the SLS program

  • Support integrated system architecture through appropriate controlling documents and/or deliverables.

  • Provide support for the digital engineering architecture used to manage SLS interfaces.

  • Perform technical integration across multiple NASA Centers, diverse engineering and program/project organizations, and a variety of engineering disciplines such as propulsion, structures, avionics and power, guidance and navigation, flight software, and human engineering.

  • Support the resolution of open requirement and design issues and concerns to ensure closure of TBDs, TBRs, etc. within the SLS and EV organization schedule allowance.

  • Support the development of key systems engineering products for SLS program/project milestones.

Exploration Ground System (EGS) integration support to be provided by the candidate includes:

  • Provide support for integration activities between SLS, EGS, Element and Prime Contractor teams for the NASA SLS LSE, SLS LSE Team and the SLS Chief Engineer.

  • Provide inputs to reviews and coordination for the Space Launch System (SLSP)-to-Ground Systems Development and Operations Program (GSDOP) Interface Control Document (ICD), Volumes 1 to 11.

  • Provide support for special studies as requested by EV72 management in support of the GSDOP ICD Development as it applies to the SLS and its Elements.

  • Assist in technical evaluations of verification closure data and rationale.

Expectations included in the ASED Internship:

  • You are expected to have a valid driver’s license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations.

  • You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.

  • We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.

Qualifications

Educational requirement is enrollment in an ABET accredited university or college program leading to a BS degree in programming, engineering, or related field. Candidate must be at least in their third year of a college program (Junior year) or equivalent. Must be able to provide own transportation.

The candidate is required to have:

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

  • Proficiency with Excel is required, and moderate programming background/classes. 

  • Candidate is expected to be a self-motivated, team player familiar with working in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to breakdown complex problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns.

  • Critical thinking, effective communications, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills.

Desired skill sets (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):

  • Experience with database management. Other desired experience: MBSE tools such as Doors Next Generation (DNG), Jira, Python, and MagicDraw.   

  • Must have some level of knowledge of how to implement Systems Engineering principles utilizing MBSE tools.   

  • Some experience with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) desired.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<10%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
