The Lifeguard is primarily responsible for maintaining order and enforcing the pool’s facility rules and regulations.

Job Responsabilities

  • Monitor swimming areas to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all patrons.
  • Enforce facility rules, safety policies, and established operating procedures.
  • Recognize and respond immediately to emergencies, including water rescues, first aid incidents, and medical emergencies.
  • Administer CPR, First Aid, AED, and other emergency care within the scope of certification until relieved by emergency medical personnel.
  • Conduct routine inspections of the pool, surrounding deck, rescue equipment, and safety devices to ensure operational readiness.
  • Maintain constant vigilance of assigned areas and identify hazardous conditions or unsafe behaviors.
  • Perform opening and closing inspections of the aquatic facility.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool decks, lifeguard stations, restrooms, and surrounding recreational areas.
  • Assist with aquatic programs, recreational activities, swim events, and special MWR functions as assigned.
  • Conduct safety orientations and educate patrons on facility rules and safe swimming practices.
  • Completed required incident reports, daily logs, and operational documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Monitor pool occupancy and ensure compliance with established capacity limits.
  • Report equipment deficiencies, maintenance concerns, or safety hazards o management.
  • Maintain rescue equipment, first aid supplies, and emergency response equipment in a ready state.
  • Provide professional customer service to all patrons.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Advanced skill in swimming and water rescue techniques, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and the ability to administer medical aid and rescue swimmers in distress.
  • Working knowledge of the regulations and rules of play regarding all activities and tournaments hosted within the facilities. Ability to answer all customer inquiries regarding the same.
  • Ability to manage the pool general appearance and cleanliness while providing continual lifeguard supervision and duties.
  • Additional knowledge/skills may be required by contract or assignment.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED Certifications.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of lifeguarding experience at a public, commercial, military, or recreational aquatic facility.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment swim skills assessment.
  • Strong knowledge of water rescue techniques, emergency response procedures, and aquatic safety practices.
  • Ability to remain alert and maintain concentration for extended periods.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required installation access and contract credentials.
  • Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
  • Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
  • Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. 
  • Employees must read, speak, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Water Safety Instructor certification.
  • Experience conducting swim lessons, fitness programs, or recreational water activities.

Working Environment

This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.

Physical Requirements

 Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
