Description:

The successful Mechanical Engineer will plan, conduct, and analyze data for hardware proof, leak, and high-pressure testing at Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, AL. The primary responsibility is physical integrity, pressure and leak testing of items which will ultimately be sent into space.  This work is being performed to verify all items meet the demanding specifications required for space flight.  You can help ensure the success of our spaceflight missions by:

• Hands on pressure and vacuum testing of systems and components destined for launch
• Problem solving and troubleshooting using your knowledge and experience
• Developing, writing, and executing unique pressure testing plans
• Providing engineering/scientific support and planning
• Leveraging your unique talents to expand upon team capabilities

Qualifications:

A BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related field is required.  Typical background is a BS degree with 10+ years of experience.

Required skills: 

• A strong mechanical background with some hands-on experience with pressure systems
• An understanding of pressure and vacuum systems
• Experience writing and developing test procedures
• A willingness to perform hands on test set up and testing
• Experience and ability in the following areas:  tubing fabrication, flare and compression fittings, and data acquisition systems
• Ability to assimilate test requirements to develop test methodology and test approaches for requirement verification, including definition of needed test resources

Desired:

• Familiar with the operation of helium mass spectrometers and leak testing Expertise in cryogen handling procedures
• Ability to plan and coordinate work to ensure schedule requirements are met
• Strong attention to detail when testing and completing required documentation
• A willingness to perform occasional shift and weekend work
• A strong safety mindset and diligence to ensure a safe working environment at all times

Work Environment

Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). May require occasional travel in the domestic USA (<10%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).  Requires the ability to lift and move tooling and components. (40%)

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
