We are currently looking for a Mechanical Responsible Engineer (RE). This position may be based in Warrington, Westlakes Ind. Estate or Stockton-on-Tees.
 

Your role

  • The Mechanical Responsible Engineer (RE) holds overall technical accountability for the mechanical and vent engineering scope within their assigned area of responsibility.

  • Operating in accordance with the Sellafield Ltd Roles, Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Authorities (R2A2) for Responsible Engineer (ED21), the RE is accountable for ensuring that engineering activities, decisions, and outputs are technically correct, safe, compliant, and fit for purpose throughout the lifecycle.                            

  • The Responsible Engineer provides technical direction and governance to the engineering team, ensures appropriate standards and assurance arrangements are applied, and retains accountability for engineering decisions, including those delegated to Lead, Principal, Senior, or Design Engineers.

  • Delegation of tasks does not remove accountability from the Responsible Engineer.                            

  • The Responsible Engineer will work closely with Project Managers, safety case owners, operations, and assurance functions to ensure engineering outcomes are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.                            

  • The Responsible Engineer may support multiple tasks or projects concurrently and will contribute across different stages of the engineering lifecycle, depending on project needs.                            

                            

Requirements

  • Significant experience delivering and governing Mechanical engineering within a regulated, safety-critical environment.                            

  • Demonstrable experience holding technical accountability for engineering scope, including decision-making and assurance.                            

  • Experience ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, standards, safety requirements, and organisational procedures.                            

  • Experience establishing and maintaining appropriate engineering governance, assurance, and verification arrangements.                            

  • Experience leading and directing multi-disciplinary engineering teams through delegated authority.                            

  • Experience managing and resolving complex technical issues and risks.                            

  • Experience interfacing with project management, safety case, operations, regulators, and independent assurance functions.                            

  • Demonstrated leadership in promoting a strong safety, quality, and compliance culture.                            

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.                            

  • Extensive Mechanical engineering experience commensurate with a Responsible Engineer role.                            

  • Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional institution (or demonstrable equivalent).                            

  • Ability to meet role-specific security clearance and site access requirements.                            

  • Experience acting as a Responsible Engineer or equivalent technical authority within a nuclear or high-hazard environment.                            

  • Experience supporting safety case development, substantiation, and regulatory engagement.                            

  • Experience across the full engineering and project lifecycle, from concept through delivery, commissioning, and handover.                            

  • Experience overseeing technical responses to deviations, concessions, and non-conformances.                            

  • Familiarity with Sellafield engineering governance, assurance, and gated processes.                            

  • Experience contributing to strategic engineering decision-making and continuous improvement.                            

  • Extensive experience in Piping design specifically for high integrity nuclear pipework, seismic pipework design, piping safety case                            

  • Strong experience in Machinery Directive, machinery design                            

  • Good experience in UKCA marking, of new facilities                            

  • Familiarisation of the Sellafield SEMs system and knowledge of the Design Capability CoE and org structure
