About the Opportunity

The Decommissioning Alliance (TDA) is a strategic partnership, operating within the DNWP framework and delivering critical decommissioning work at Sellafield, including the UK’s most challenging Legacy Ponds facilities. As a key partner within DNWP, TDA contributes to Sellafield Ltd.’s mission while ensuring communities, supply chains, and stakeholders benefit from meaningful, measurable Social Value outcomes.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Waste Engineer who will be responsible for supporting the delivery of waste management requirements across the Programme Resilience workstream. This workstream comprises a portfolio of projects designed to enhance programme resilience, remove single-point vulnerabilities, and accelerate mission delivery.

Working closely with the Workstream Lead and Project Manager, the Waste Engineer will provide specialist waste management expertise throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring effective waste strategies are developed and implemented in line with Sellafield arrangements, regulatory requirements, and programme objectives. In some instances, the role will extend beyond project completion to provide ongoing waste management guidance and support.

This position offers an opportunity to make a measurable impact in a complex and fast-paced nuclear environment, requiring the ability to deliver high-quality outcomes while managing multiple priorities and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist waste management support to Programme Resilience projects from concept through to commissioning and close-out.

  • Develop, review, and implement waste management strategies that align with Sellafield governance, environmental standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Advise project teams on waste minimisation, segregation, characterisation, treatment, packaging, transport, and disposal options.

  • Work closely with operations, engineering, waste management, safety case, and project stakeholders to ensure waste considerations are integrated into project delivery.

  • Identify and develop pragmatic, innovative waste solutions that support programme resilience and operational objectives while maintaining compliance.

  • Support project decision-making through informed technical advice, drawing on plant and operational experience.

  • Ensure waste management activities comply with relevant site arrangements, safety requirements, and environmental obligations.

  • Produce and review waste management documentation, technical justifications, and supporting governance submissions.

  • Identify opportunities to optimise waste routes, improve efficiency, reduce waste volumes, and deliver value across projects.

  • Support the transition of projects into operations and provide post-project waste management guidance where required.

Here's What You'll Need:

  • Significant experience working on nuclear waste management projects within the Sellafield site environment.

  • Demonstrable plant-based experience with a strong understanding of operational interfaces and challenges within nuclear facilities.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Sellafield waste management arrangements, processes, waste routes, and governance requirements.

  • Experience supporting projects through concept development, design, implementation, commissioning, and handover phases.

  • Strong understanding of waste hierarchy principles, including waste minimisation, segregation, characterisation, treatment, and disposal.

  • Ability to challenge conventional approaches and develop innovative, compliant waste management solutions.

  • Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills across operational, engineering, waste management, and project functions.

  • Ability to provide technically robust advice that supports project delivery and optimises waste outcomes.

  • Previous experience supporting Legacy Ponds and/or hazard reduction programmes at Sellafield.

  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, including the production and review of waste management documentation and technical reports.
