Responsibilities:

This posting is for a part-time Systems Engineer position to support NASA’s Human Exploration and Development and Operations (HEDO) Office at Marshall Space Flight Center. This position directly supports the Mult-Purpose Habitat (MPH) effort and focuses on risk management, integration, coordination, and analysis across system development activities.

The selected candidate will support the identification, analysis, tracking, and communication of program risks, working closely with systems engineering, program management, and technical teams to ensure risks are understood and managed throughout the lifecycle.

The responsible engineer will:

  • Support development, maintenance, and configuration control of program risk registers and databases.
  • Assist in identification, documentation, and tracking of technical, schedule, and programmatic risks.
  • Coordinate with subsystem leads and integrated product teams (IPTs) to gather risk inputs and status updates.
  • Support development and tracking of risk mitigation plans and associated actions.
  • Assist in conducting qualitative and quantitative risk assessments, including basic probabilistic analysis.
  • Compile, organize, and analyze risk data to support program decision making and status reporting.
  • Support preparation of risk-related briefings, charts, and reports for program leadership and reviews.
  • Participate in risk boards, technical interchange meetings, and milestone reviews.
  • Assist in facilitating risk identification workshops and capturing outcomes and action items.
  • Ensure alignment and consistency of risks across integrated teams and related programs.
  • Support continuous improvement of risk management processes, tools, and best practices.
  • Interface with multidisciplinary teams including systems engineering, safety, mission assurance, and program management.
  • Perform other duties as required in support of MPH development and integration.

Qualifications:

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of 3 years of direct engineering experience, preferably in aerospace or complex system development environments or MS degree  and 1 year of direct engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting engineering or programmatic activities within complex technical projects.
  • Familiarity with basic risk management principles, including risk management principles, including risk identification, assessment, and mitigation planning.
  • Ability to organize, track, and communicate technical information across multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including development of technical briefings and reports.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and support cross-functional coordination.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID.

Preferences:

  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, or other complex development programs.
  • Familiarity with NASA systems engineering lifecycle process or similar frameworks.
  • Exposure to risk management tools or databases (e.g. Active Risk Manager or similar)
  • Basic understanding of scheduling tools.
  • Exposure to qualitative and/or quantitative risk analysis methods.
  • Experience developing dashboards or reports.
  • Experience supporting technical reviews, boards, or program milestone events.
  • Interest in developing deeper expertise in risk management and program integration.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%).  Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%). 

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.  Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
