About IA&R (Independent Assurance and Regulation)


IA&R has been providing risk based, proportionate, independent oversight and assurance to the civil and defence nuclear industry for over 60 years. This role provides a diverse and exciting range of opportunities to support the UK submarine programme in relation to software, control and instrumentation, associated to emergent issues in-service, during manufacturing, plant-life extension and through next generation concept design, to ensure the Continuous At-Sea Deterrent (CASD).

This role can be based in either Bristol or Warrington with travel to customer sites required bi-monthly.

Amentum are recruiting for a Safety Critical Software and Hardware Assurance Engineer to join our EC&I Engineering Team. The EC&I Engineering team operates within the developing EC&I Engineering Centre of Excellence (CoE). The Safety Critical Software and Hardware Assurance Engineer is responsible for delivering high-quality expertise across IA&R projects, contracts, and operations. The role involves conducting audits of both safety critical FPGA and software systems to be deployed within nuclear systems at supplier sites, as well as independent assessment of control and instrumentation safety case related documentation.

We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who have experience of developing, testing and commissioning safety critical FPGA or software for applications in industries such as nuclear and aerospace and using the standards IEC 61508 and DO-178C/DO-254.

Key Accountabilities:

Engineering Delivery Across IA&R

  • Provide support to projects, contracts, and operational teams across IA&R.

  • Support delivery teams with technical advice, problem-solving, and assurance performing independently (and potentially leading on):

  • Assurance activities related to FPGA and software development projects relating to control systems

  • Reviewing project plans, requirements, design and verification work products to ensure adherence to relevant standards and industry best practice

  • Representing Amentum at system and software assurance audits and meetings with clients and other contractors

  • Providing formal independent nuclear safety and technical assessment and advice of documents relating to nuclear reactor EC&I systems, including cyber security issues, documenting the results in formal letters, and presenting the results to safety and technical committees.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, quality, safety, and delivery teams.

  • Communicate engineering requirements, constraints, and solutions clearly to stakeholders.

Capability Development & Knowledge Sharing

  • Contribute to knowledge sharing, technical forums, and best practice development.

  • Support mentoring and development of graduate and early-career engineers where appropriate.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Technical competence and experience in EC&I, software and hardware engineering. Demonstrated through relevant Engineering, Computing or Scientific Degree.

  • Experience of using IEC 61508,  RTCA DO-178C or RTCA DO-254.

  • Experience of working with programmable hardware or software used in safety or mission critical applications such as nuclear or aerospace.

  • Strong awareness of engineering risk, safety, and quality requirements. An ability to critically assess complex technical and safety arguments, based upon knowledge and understanding and communicate the findings effectively.

  • Ability to work effectively across a matrix organisation..

  • Ability to clearly communicate with customers and stakeholders both verbally and in written form. 

  • Commitment to professional development and contribution to CoE development.
