Summary:  

Responsible for administering and implementing the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) Environmental Safety and Health Plan and ensuring participant compliance with applicable industrial and Federal standards. This position deploys to the Amundsen Scott South Pole Station and/or McMurdo Station acts as the primary point of contact (POC) for safety program compliance and communication efforts. 

 

The Safety Engineer is a member of the site leadership team. The safety engineer will portray the following leadership qualities: 

 

  • Encourages ownership of safety by front line leadership.  

  • Is seen as a dependable source of EHS technical information. 

  • Has a proactive integrated system safety programming approach.  

  • Provides accurate information, bases decisions on facts, utilizing best industry practices within the Antarctic environment. 

  • Provides unsolicited solutions, collaborative peer to peer support for team members.  

  • Ensures integrated process safety systems are functioning as designed. 

  • Support the development, implementation, and data capture for leading indicators.    

 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Develops and implements safety and health standards, criteria, and guidelines, such as those issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the NSF – Polar Environmental Safety and Health, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and all other applicable regulations. 

  • Scheduling and conducting training sessions based upon team members job specific requirements. Training may include General Safety Awareness, Supervisor Safety Training, Scaffolding, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Electrical Safety, Respiratory Protection, and other job-specific training. 

  • Acts as subject matter expert (SME) for ASC Safety and Health programs and assists work centers by providing guidance on program compliance.  

  • Performs industrial hygiene surveys and documents findings according to accepted procedures. Uses and maintains health and safety related instrumentation, including 4-gas meters, noise dosimeters, Photo-ionization Detectors. 

  • Issue safety equipment and permits as required. 

  • Conducts inventory of health and safety related supplies and provides information to manager for purchase.  

  • Provides SME risk review and permit approval for all confined space work. Monitors confined space activity to ensure compliance with issued permit.   

  • Provide guidance and SME support to the Station Safety Committee. 

  • Attend weekly work center safety meetings as requested by the Safety Supervisor. 

  • Interfaces with all other functional first line management and supervision, ensuring risk management methodologies are being incorporated into all facets of operation.  

  • Complete work center visits/inspections to ensure compliance with work center specific safety programs. 

  • Follow-up and assist supervisors, line-leaders with incident investigations and root cause analysis. 

  • Performs other duties as required.  

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses: 

  • BS in chemistry, environmental, engineering, health and safety, or related field is required. An additional four years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.  

  • Minimum of three years of experience with safety and health rules, regulations, standards, and the components of an effective safety program, including plant operations and/or construction safety, fire protection, public health, and development of related training programs is required.   

 

Expected Skills and Competencies: 

  • Experience in conducting thorough root cause analysis to ensure root causal factors are identified and mitigated in response to safety-related incidents is required.  Proficient in conducting safety training and presentations to groups, with the ability to communicate with both large and small audiences is required.   

  • Working knowledge of basic industrial hygiene principles and the personal utilization of air purifying respirators, (APR) will be required. 

  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely is required. Ability to maintain good working relationships with employees is required.  

 

Preferred: 

  • OSHA 500/501 Authorized Trainer Credentials preferred. Experience in construction safety is preferred. 

 

Physical and/or Other Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods  

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica 

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer 

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF 

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.  

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.  Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.  

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States 

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
