Position Description

The person in this position will provide Systems Engineering, Requirements management, Verification, and Validation (RV&V) coordination, system level integration support, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) support, MagicDraw administration support, Digital Transformation coordination to the MSFC Systems Design and Verification Branch (EV72) for support to the Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) Office, and to the MSFC Systems Engineering and Integration Division (EV70).

The successful candidate will manage, configure, and maintain the Dassault Systems MagicDraw client to support team collaborative modeling environment.  The candidate will also manage the coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, cross-program elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. The candidate will supply leadership and/or support for the implementation of model-based systems engineering solutions and the digital transformation of key systems engineering products including requirements specifications, support program/project deliverables and subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured.  The candidate will also supply leadership and/or support for the development of key systems engineering products including requirements, specifications, support program/project milestones and subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured. The candidate will work with the SNP customers/partners from inception to deployment to ensure stakeholder needs are satisfied.

System engineering support to be provided by the candidate includes the following responsibilities:

  • Lead and/or support the development of SNP element requirements and verification products and ensure compliance with these requirements during development, testing and evaluation of SNP sub-elements.
  • Lead and /or support the administration of MagicDraw installation, configuring and upgrading.
  • Lead and/or support the creation, importing and managing user accounts, groups, roles and permissions within MagicDraw.
  • Lead and/or supporting the monitoring, investigating, troubleshooting user connection issues, resolving system issues and provide end user support.
  • Provide technical integration with other engineering disciplines, the SNP project element, and cross-program elements, including risk-based insight/oversight through assessment of requirements and verification activities.
  • Support the SNP Lead Systems Engineer (LSE) and Engineering Discipline Lead Engineers (EDLEs) to evaluate prime contractor deliverables, including assessments of element Detailed Verification Objectives and verification of allocated end item specification requirements.
  • Support systems engineering tasks and assessments to support the SNP Program through reviews, meetings, working groups, trade studies and development of key systems engineering products to support program milestones.
  • Support developing integrated schedules and other tracking mechanisms to manage the work and identify risks and opportunities.
  • Implement Digital Engineering best practices, approaches, techniques, and tools.
  • Provide support for requirement V&V including V&V planning, execution, coordination, and integration for system level requirements to assure design compliance.
  • Communicate technical issues, risks, best practices and lessons-learned related to products, technical positions, requirement management, and V&V practices and develop integrated schedules and other tracking mechanisms to manage systems engineering tasks.

Qualifications

A degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or a BS degree in a related technical discipline from an ABET accredited institution is required.  Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 10 years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration, launch vehicle definition, functional design, design integration, requirement management, requirement verification, and/or requirement validation. 

Applicants must have the following required qualifications:

  • Ability to function in a self-directed dynamic work environment as an effective team member, willing to assume a leadership role in the SNP systems engineering effort.
  • Prior Systems Engineering experience to include but not limited to system design, functional decomposition, requirements development, analysis, verification, and validation.
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering policies and procedures related to verification and experience with using tools/systems to manage verification compliance data.
  • Prior experience in systems administration, specifically supporting MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) tools
  • Prior Systems Engineering experience to include but not limited to system design, functional decomposition, requirements development, analysis, verification, and validation.
  • Demonstrate experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools such as MagicDraw.
  • Demonstrated experience working across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to facilitate and execute program systems engineering tasks and resolve systems integration issues.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive-level briefings, excellent oral, written, and customer relation skills, and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Must be a Us Citizen and have a STAR ID

Applicants should also have one or more of the following desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in effective technical leadership of an engineering team.
  • Knowledge of launch vehicle programmatic planning processes and experience performing oversight of prime contractor hardware production, test, and certification efforts.
  • Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with aerospace vehicles and system design.
  • Experience with defining and managing interfaces, interface requirements, and interface verification.
  • Certification in Model Based System Engineering (MBSE), particularly Object Management Group® (OMG)-Certified Systems Modeling Professional™ (OCSMP™) Certification.  

Essential Functions

Work Environment: 

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%).  Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).  

Equipment and Machines: 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: 

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.  Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. 

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
