We have an exciting opportunity for a Summer 2026 - Aerothermal Engineering Intern to join the team!

This is a temporary role not to exceed 8 weeks.

The Summer 2026 - Aerothermal Engineering Intern will:

  • Apply knowledge of high-speed Earth entry aerothermodynamics to human-rated spacecraft.
  • Utilize NASA Aerothermal CFD solvers for spacecraft entry analysis.
  • Create CFD grids utilizing grid generation software.
  • Perform detailed aerothermodynamic analysis over a wide range of flight regimes.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Requisition Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university.

  • Completed at least 45 credit hours.

  • Minimum of 2.8 GPA.

  • BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school
  • Exposure to high-speed aerothermodynamics theory
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment consisting of NASA civil servants and various contractor employees.


Requisition Preferences:

  • Exposure to NASA Aerothermal CFD solver (DPLR, LAURA, LociCHEM, US3D, HyperSolve, FUN3D)
  • Exposure to entry vehicle dynamics including supersonic and hypersonic flows, aerodynamics, trajectories, and aerothermodynamics
  • Experience in interpretation of ground test and flight data
  • Experience with hypersonic test facilities
  • Experience in boundary layer transition modeling
  • Knowledge of cavity, protuberance, blowing, and roughness induced boundary layer transitions
  • Knowledge of CFD database management and post processing automation for dissemination of downstream products
  • Knowledge of automating analyses with programming tools like C++ and python
  • Experience with CFD visualization tools like Tecplot, Fieldview, or Paraview
  • Experience with CFD grid generation software like Pointwise or Hypermesh
  • Experience with modern software best practices like software repositories and CI/CD
  • Experience with configuration management

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
