Responsibilities:

This posting is for a Systems Engineer Lead position supporting NASA’s Human Landing System (HLS) Program at Marshall Space Flight Center. This position serves as the Mission Integration and Systems Team (MIST) Operations Technical Lead and is responsible for planning, integrating, and executing mission operations activities supporting Human Landing System missions throughout the mission lifecycle.

The selected candidate will provide technical leadership for mission operations planning, console readiness, operational documentation, training integration, anomaly response, and cross-program coordination. The position serves as the primary interface between NASA engineering organizations, mission operations teams, commercial providers, and external stakeholders to ensure operational products, personnel, and systems are prepared to safely execute HLS missions.

The responsible engineer will:

  • Lead development, maintenance, and implementation of HLS mission operations products, including Operations Plans, Concepts of Operations (ConOps), console procedures, and operational documentation.
  • Coordinate mission operations integration across NASA centers, commercial providers, engineering organizations, and mission operations teams.
  • Lead console planning activities, including staffing, communication loop development, physical console requirements, and multi-center operations integration.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor operational readiness plans, training plans, certification activities, and console readiness metrics.
  • Coordinate Mission Integration and Systems Team (MIST) training activities and ensure alignment with Mission Management Team (MMT) training objectives.
  • Lead technical integration activities supporting operational readiness reviews, flight readiness reviews, simulations, mission rehearsals, and mission execution.
  • Coordinate technical issue resolution, anomaly response activities, call-tree activations, and operational replanning during dynamic mission operations.
  • Manage operational change requests, pre-flight technical issues, action item closure, and operational products through technical working groups, control boards, and readiness reviews.
  • Lead operational technical working groups and facilitate coordination among Technical Authorities, Discipline Leads, Subject Matter Experts, commercial providers, and NASA organizations.
  • Develop technical briefings, operational status reports, readiness assessments, and management presentations supporting program leadership.
  • Support mission operations integration activities across all phases of the Human Landing System lifecycle.
  • Perform other duties as required in support of Human Landing System mission operations and integration.

Qualifications:

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of 20 years of direct engineering experience or MS degree with 18 years’ experience, preferably supporting aerospace systems development, systems engineering, requirements management, or verification activities.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting human spaceflight mission operations, systems engineering, mission integration, or flight operations.
  • Experience developing operational documentation including Operations Plans, Concepts of Operations (ConOps), console procedures, or equivalent mission operations products.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical teams in dynamic operational environments.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating activities across multiple organizations and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and real-time problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including development and presentation of technical information to management and mission leadership.

Preferences:

  • Experience supporting NASA Human Landing System, Artemis, Orion, Space Launch System, Exploration Ground Systems, International Space Station, Commercial Crew, or other human spaceflight programs.
  • Experience supporting mission control operations, flight control teams, or real-time mission execution.
  • Experience developing operational readiness, training, simulation, and certification programs.
  • Experience supporting technical working groups, readiness reviews, Flight Readiness Reviews, Mission Management Team activities, or mission simulations.
  • Experience coordinating technical issue resolution, anomaly response, and mission replanning activities.
  • Experience working with commercial spaceflight providers and multi-center NASA organizations.
  • Experience standing up new mission operations organizations, console configurations, or operational concepts.
  • Experience supporting configuration management, change control, operational metrics, and technical status reporting.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%).  Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%). 

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.  Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
