As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists in areas such hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!
Amentum is currently interviewing candidates for a Summer Intern within the SLS Emulator System Engineering group. The position supports our NASA customer / ESSCA contract located within MSFC in Huntsville, AL.
Expectations included in the ASED Internship:
You are expected to have a valid STAR driver’s license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations
You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.
We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.
Position Description:
We are looking for undergraduate or graduate student summer intern to provide blast and debris test and analysis support to the Aerosciences branch (EV33) in the Structural Design and Analysis Division (EV30) at the MSFC’s Spacecraft and Vehicle Systems Department.
Responsibilities:
Specific support to be provided includes, but is not limited to, the following:
· Perform basic engineering analyses and apply physics-based models for the prediction of damage due to launch debris environments.
· Support designing, testing, and measuring explosive environments including blast waves and high-speed imagery for the development of empirical blast and fragmentation models.
· Sort, catalog, and document detailed launch debris parameters, assessment results and risk summaries for multiple launch vehicles supporting vehicle hazard assessments.
· Support development or improvement of test processes and operations.
· Support test setup such as installation of pressure transducers, strain gauges, thermocouples, and high-speed cameras.
· Apply engineering techniques and procedures to analyze and evaluate specific problems, data, or other work features that are broad in scope and complexity.
· Participate and present findings in reviews, meetings, teleconferences, and working groups.
· Identify, describe, and communicate potential risks.
· Provide clear and effective communications with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
Here's What You'll Need:
Current enrollment in BS or MS degree program in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or related degree program is required. Degree program at an ABET accredited institution preferred. Students enrolled in BS must have completed the 2nd year of college (sophomore year) or equivalent.
Must be able to provide own transportation.
Ideal candidate will have a strong sampling of the following skills and a desire to learn.
· Experience in applying physics-based models for engineering analysis.
· Experience with programming languages such as Python or MATLAB and their application to modeling and simulation.
· Familiarity with CAD software such as Creo.
· Familiarity with developing models and performing simulations using Multiphysics simulation software packages such as Ansys LS-DYNA.
· Basic knowledge of space vehicle design, functions, terminology, interfaces, technical disciplines, and system design.
· Knowledge of material properties and mechanics of materials as applied in space vehicles.
· Self-motivated, proactive, and effective team players with customer relations skills, familiar with working in a dynamic work environment.
· Ability to perform tasks requiring focus and attention to detail and completed within prescribed organizational schedules.
· Ability to be flexible and easily refocus on tasks when task directions or requirements change.
· Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams & Outlook) is required.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate technical information via written reports and presentations.
· Must have completed sophomore year of university studies and be in good academic standing.
· Maintain an overall average GPA of 3.0.

Essential Functions
Work Environment:
General office (70%) and test environment (30%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to perform engineering tasks and write reports (55%). Also, requires standing and walking for extended periods of time in the test area (30%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (5%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
A REAL ID-compliant license/ID or another acceptable form of identification to access federal facilities. The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
