As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

The Test Engineer Intern will work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, and technicians supporting NASA missions with a strong emphasis on teamwork and safety. This role supports the Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) for the International Space Station (ISS) and future exploration missions.

This internship is primarily focused on wastewater engineering, particularly the development, testing, and improvement of systems used to recover water from urine and other wastewater sources on orbit. Candidates should have interest in fluid transport, thermal systems, and hands-on engineering, along with a willingness to work with real-world wastewater processes (in many forms).

Under supervision, the intern will assist with mechanical design tasks, modeling of specialized test articles and test stands, and development of equipment used in fluid and thermal testing.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Writing or supporting test protocols

  • Helping build and modify test stands

  • Executing tests

  • Gathering and interpreting data and preparing documentation.

The candidate will collaborate with project and system engineers to support definition of operational requirements, system behavior, component selection, safety considerations, and test execution. Work may also involve helping evaluate improvements to existing ISS life support systems and supporting troubleshooting efforts when anomalies occur.

Expectations included in the ASED Internship:

  • You are expected to have a valid driver’s license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations.

  • You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.

  • We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.

Enrollment in an ABET accredited college or university program leading to a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or related field is required. The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, automobile liability insurance and be able to provide own transportation. Proper ‘STAR-ID’ driver’s license for registration and admittance to Redstone Arsenal is required.

Technical/Hands-On Skills (preferred or to be developed during internship)

  • Interest in wastewater treatment, chemical processes, or fluid systems

  • Familiarity or coursework in engineering experimentation or laboratory testing

  • Basic understanding of thermal/fluid components, systems, and instrumentation

  • Introductory knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems

  • Interest or experience assembling or modifying laboratory or test equipment

  • Exposure to developing or following test procedures

  • Ability to perform basic data review, plotting, or analysis

  • Interest in component and instrumentation sourcing

  • Ability to support coordination for machined parts

  • Exposure to systems engineering concepts

  • Proficiency with common software tools (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Ability to review and edit technical documents
