We have an exciting opportunity for a Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Engineer to join the JETSII Contract!

The candidate specializes in some of the NDE methods, such as x-ray inspection, ultrasonic testing, and eddy current testing including development, qualification of NDE procedures, and personnel qualification and certification. Work under this position supports multiple programs, including Commercial Crew Program (CCP).

The work includes:

  • Prepare, review, and assess NDE requirements, plans, procedures, and reports covering a broad range of metallic, nonmetallic, and composite materials and manufacturing processes
  • Plan, review, assess, and conduct probability of detection (POD) capability demonstrations and inspection procedure qualification tests
  • Analyze and resolve NDE issues and complete actions towards resolution
  • Recommend NDE methods, techniques, physical reference standards, and qualification tests to satisfy NDE requirements
  • Prepare and present NDE work activity reports for project and program meetings
  • Plan, conduct, and report inspections in support of procedure development, hardware failure investigation, and problem resolution
  • Support NDE Laboratory operations and maintenance through recommendation of state-of-the-art equipment acquisitions and outdated equipment retirement
  • Represent NASA NDE/M&P engineering at government and industry Materials & Processes (M&P) and fracture control forums including technical interchange meetings, working groups, and conferences as required
  • Tasks will involve all NDE methods and techniques with emphasis on fluorescent penetrant; eddy current and eddy current array; ultrasonic, phased array, and EMAT; film, computed, and digital radiography; computed tomography; laser shearography; and infrared thermography; inspection automation; and machine learning applied to aerospace materials and components
  • The position requires occasional travel
  • Perform other duties as required


Requisition Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering with experience in the field or in a related area.

  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Hands-on experience in NDE (internships, coursework) and/or a minimum of 1 year of direct experience.
  • Basic understanding of NDE procedure assessments, development, and problem solving
  • Familiarity with common NDE techniques, including fluorescent penetrant; eddy current and eddy current array; ultrasonic and phased array; radiography; computed tomography; laser shearography; infrared thermography; and inspection automation.
  • Proficiency with standard desktop software applications; MS Office required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.


Requisition Preferences:

  • Ph.D. preferred.

  • 5-10 years of experience in NDE.

  • Formal education in NDE is desirable but not necessary if professional NDE training/experience has been obtained.
  • ASNT Level 3 certification is favorable but not required.
  • Previous experience supporting NDE development, test, and evaluation activities for NASA and/or Aerospace projects
  • Experience with use of NDE simulation software applications, e.g., CIVA, ESBeamTool, and POD software, e.g. mh1823
  • Familiar with metallic and nonmetallic materials and their manufacturing processes, which include welding, additive manufacturing, composite fabrication, and repair.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
