As part of the BOS contract for the Department of the Air Force 6th Engineer Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base, FL is committed to delivering comprehensive base civil engineering services that support mission readiness and operational excellence. Our mission is to ensure safe, efficient, and resilient infrastructure that enables the Air Force to execute its global responsibilities.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Staff Design Civil Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing a variety of civil engineering projects, including but not limited to airfields, bridges, buildings, channels, pipelines, roads, sewage systems, and water supply infrastructure.

Essential Functions:

• Develop and review civil engineering designs, plans, and specifications for infrastructure projects including roads, utilities, drainage systems, and site development.

• Conduct site assessments, feasibility studies, and technical analyses to support planning and execution of new designs, renovations, and repairs.

• Evaluate existing infrastructure and provide recommendations for upgrades, modifications, or repairs.

• Prepare engineering reports, cost estimates, project updates, and technical documentation for supervisors and clients.

• Draft clear and concise technical documentation to communicate design intent and project objectives to stakeholders.

• Review architect-engineer submissions, technical evaluations, and preliminary design reports, providing constructive feedback.

• Apply strong engineering judgment and problem-solving skills throughout all phases of project development.

• Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and environmental regulations.

• Manage workload independently, take ownership of assigned tasks, and consistently meet project deadlines.

• Contribute to quality assurance by reviewing internal and external designs for consistency and alignment with project goals.

• Take initiative to define project requirements when objectives are not clearly established.

• Review shop drawings and submittals to ensure conformance with design intent and specifications.

• Support construction administration by responding to RFIs, evaluating change orders, and participating in project meetings.

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to understand project requirements and deliver effective engineering solutions.

• Communicate effectively with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Other Essential Functions:

Must complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Required Education / Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a program certified by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

• Ability to obtain and hold Secret Security clearance.

• At least three years’ experience working in a military environment and familiarity with Air Force Engineering guidance, rules, and regulations, preferred.

• Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, codes, and standards.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Required Certificate / License / Registration:

• Professional Engineering License in the State of Florida

• Valid Driver’s License

Preferred:

• Experience with Federal (DoD, Federal Civilian, or Defense Contractor) projects.

• Familiarity with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), Air Force Instructions (AFIs), and other DoD design standards.

Working Conditions:

• Work is primarily indoors in an office setting - 70%

• Inspections and surveys are outside - 30%

• Extreme (hot/cold) temperatures involved: 20%

• Hazardous conditions - Exposure to work sites 20%

• Travel/transportation requirements: May require occasional local travel - 10%

Physical Requirements:

• Lifting: Up to 50 lbs.: 10%

• Climbing: 10%

• Crawling: 0%

• Special clothing/equipment (wearing): may be required to wear PPE - steel toed shoes, safety glasses and vest when entering construction sites. 20%

• Unusual physical requirements: Sitting (50%), Standing (30%), Bending (10%), stooping (10%)

• High noise level: Active Air Force Base 10%
