  • You are expected to have a valid driver's license and be able to provide your own transportation.

  • You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.

  • We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.

Position Description:

The Special Test & Equipment Design Intern will aid the lead engineer(s) in the following:

  • Develop designs & drawings / work with large assembly and subassembly models in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) program as well as other new and existing programs at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC)

  • Possibly help the lead engineer in support of on-going manufacturing of assemblies.

Job duties will include:

  • Working with the lead engineer and other teams of engineers and designers to aid in the development of hardware components as well as Pro Engineer/CREO models of structures and mechanisms.

  • Participate in task meetings and conferences as requested per the lead engineer.

  • Develop and deliver reports and presentations to MSFC and ESSCA management as needed per the lead engineer.

  • Use engineering experience to review/perform classical hand stress analysis, finite element stress analysis, fastener analysis, and weld analysis.

Qualifications:

Educational requirement is enrollment in an accredited college or university program leading to a BS degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field. ABET accreditation desired.

Must be able to provide own transportation.

Experience with:

  • CAD software, preferably CREO or Solid Edge, is desired.

  • Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Design & Tolerancing) is desired.

  • Familiarity with blueprints/drawings as well as structural design of equipment is desired.

  • Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Operating System is highly desired.

  • Microsoft Office Suites for 2007/2010/2013, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.

  • File organization skills is highly desired.

  • Teamwork and partnering skills are required.

  • Familiarity with MS TEAMS meeting software.

  • Stress Analysis software preferred is FEMAP/ANSYS/ABAQUS.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office and environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (20%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and other facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
