As a thermal analyst you will support the MSFC Space Systems Department in technical activities for the development of space systems hardware, performing thermal analysis for flight hardware systems.  Your work will support existing programs at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) including Human Landing System, International Space Station (Environmental Variable Controls and Experimental Payloads), and Space Launch System (Avionics, Thermal/Fluids Support).

You will be expected to contribute to the development, test, and certification of space systems hardware for a wide variety of NASA’s ongoing and future projects.  You will provide technical support in the thermal analysis evaluation of Environmental Control Life Support Systems equipment.  You will be expected to:

  • Develop and execute detailed thermal models for spaceflight hardware and instruments
  • Perform transient and steady-state thermal analyses using tools such as Thermal Desktop, Sinda/Fluint, ANSYS, or equivalent.
  • Define thermal requirements at the subsystem and system levels.
  • Conduct thermal verification planning, including test planning, correlation, and model updates.
  • Review design artifacts to ensure compliance with thermal and system requirements.
  • Interface with mechanical, structural, fluids, and systems engineering teams to develop integrated solutions.
  • Develop formal thermal analysis packages of evaluated systems documenting predicted results for project/program management at milestone reviews.  Packages of technical documentation may include analysis reports, verification matrices, and presentation material.
  • Participate in technical interchange meetings, design reviews, hazard analysis discussions, and project planning sessions.
  • Work within a team of fellow analysts while interfacing with program stakeholders and leaders.
  • Support troubleshooting of hardware non-conformances related to thermal behavior.
  • Collaborate with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers in the development of integrated flight hardware.

Required Qualifications: BS degree (MS or PhD preferred) from an ABET accredited institution in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering; or related field with an emphasis in heat transfer or thermal analysis is required.  

  • 10+ years of experience in the application of finite element methods using thermal desktop code and empirical closed-form thermal analysis techniques
  • Experience conducting assessments and verification of spaceflight equipment
  • 10+ years of experience of thermal testing
  • Experience as technical lead of projects throughout the entire design development, manufacture, and operational stages
  • Knowledge of orbital thermal environment development
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Mentoring experience of junior thermal analysts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience in the application of finite element methods using thermal desktop code and empirical closed-form thermal analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of NASA and MSFC standards and specifications as well as experience with the design and analysis of thermal systems
  • Proficiency with thermal test set up support

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%).  Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%). 

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday.  Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
