Amentum, a global leader in designing, engineering, and modernizing critical systems and programs of national importance across defense, security, intelligence, energy, and the environment, is seeking an Assistant Fire Chief - Training for a pending contract award.

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for training program that meet and maintain certification requirements for fire personnel. Ensure the integrity of the certification program (s). Identify and use proper channels to procure equipment, computers, publications, supplies, and training aids necessary to conduct required knowledge training and performance evaluations. Oversee the day-to-day operations of assigned shift to ensure proper response of fire fighters to emergencies. The incumbent also has focused responsibility to provide initial and recurring training to the Fire Department personnel.  Advises Fire Chief of all activities occurring within the Fire Department and provides support and assistance as needed.

Other duties include:

  • Direct the day-to-day operations of shift including care and maintenance of equipment and facilities, directing and participating in training exercises, making adjustments to crew assignments/vehicle assignments as needed.
  • Ensure fire inspections are completed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that individuals taking performance tests are not tested by personnel who were instructors for the individual or objective being evaluated. 
  • Establish a training program, and ensure the qualifications and competence of performance evaluators. In the event of failure, ensure remedial training is conducted
  • Make required performance test logistical arrangements, to include notifying the candidates in advance of the dates, locations, and requirements.
  • Conduct an orientation session for new fire personnel to include procedures, policies, plans, and safety precautions.
  • Maintain detailed training records of each fire employee
  • Manage a preventive maintenance program for fire fighting vehicles and equipment.
  • Justify and present personnel, vehicle and equipment needs to the Fire Chief for consideration.
  • Direct assigned crewmembers during all types of emergency situations. Monitors all injuries to personnel.
  • Maintains current instruction manuals and user guides on all fire equipment and tools/ apparatus.  
  • Trains and evaluates performance of department firefighters upon completion of required training sessions.
  • Conducts “live” emergency scenarios to evaluate department employee skills and knowledge gained from training sessions.
  • Recommend new policies and procedures for approval.
  • Protect and investigate evidence that may indicate the cause of fire and reports unusual circumstances to Fire Chief.
  • Supervise and complete performance evaluations of Fire Fighters on assigned shift. May also give feedback on Fire Fighters who temporarily work on assigned shift.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as an Assistant Fire Chief for Operations in a fire department of the same size and scope of Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, Africa.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and make effective decisions.
  • Solid communications skills, strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong ability to work and lead as a member of a diverse, dynamic team.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
  • Must be able to pass the agility test prior to start of position and yearly thereafter.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain requirements for duration of deployment.
  • Must have an Active Secret US Government Clearance. Note: US Citizenship is required to maintain a Secret Clearance.

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent, some college preferred

WORKING AND LIVING CONDITIONS

This position may be located in an environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions. Employees must be willing and able to perform regular job requirements in this environment. Employees must be willing and able to perform physical activities including, but not limited to, heavy lifting and moving of items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum; climbing in and out of equipment; crawling; and working outdoors. This includes being able to lift and carry 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time and being capable of running and ‘duck & cover’ during emergencies without putting oneself or others at risk.
