Summary:

Manages the daily operations at USAP Cargo. This position will oversee the packaging, marking, labeling, documenting, and movement of all USAP material from McMurdo Station to outlying field locations, the United States, and other international destinations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Is responsible for ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace
  • Supervises and leads the USAP Cargo warehouse personnel
  • Trains warehouse personnel in the safe operation of material handling equipment (pallet jacks, forklifts 4,000-15000 lbs. capacities), passenger vans, and pick-up trucks
  • Oversees receiving and delivering of science and technical event cargo
  • Responsible for accurately processing outgoing shipments, ensuring all participants meet packaging, marking, labeling, and documentation requirements
  • Responsible for identifying and safely handling dangerous goods
  • Tracks intracontinental and international cargo shipments using Maximo and commercial carrier sites
  • Ensure accurate international import, export, and customs compliance documentation
  • Coordinates with Grantees, ASC Workcenters, other USAP Agencies, and the U.S. Military to move mission-critical material on time
  • Assist in packing temperature-sensitive samples for transport to the United States and international institutions
  • Performs quality assurance audits for processes throughout the cargo preparation, movement, and shipping container loading
  • Manages warehouse supply inventory
  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions and evaluations, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy
  • Attends daily and weekly safety meetings and occasionally presents weekly safety lectures.
  • Completes monthly work center safety inspection
  • Will frequently perform strenuous physical work
  • Works weekends and extra hours as required
  • Performs other duties as required

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • A minimum of 3 years of diversified experience in the cargo shipping industry, warehouse operations, heavy equipment, or equivalent experience is required.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong customer service and customer resolution skills are required. 
  • Strong organizational and verbal/written communication skills are required.
  • Must become proficient in MAXIMO, the cargo-tracking database, and assist with tracking critical cargo as needed.

Preferred:

  • An understanding of remote site and/or polar logistics.
  • Previous experience with the USAP Cargo or Supply departments
  • Previous experience in the dangerous goods transportation regulations (49 CFR, AFMAN, IATA, and IMDG).
  • Previous experience in shipping temperature-controlled cargo.

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
