Our Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) Team Leads serve as first line supervisors and oversee the Task Orders and personnel that support the requirements defined in the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) Contract Performance Work Statement, plus any additional skills that may be required in support of ASED. They ensure that high performing people are acquired through disciplined human resources processes and are appropriately trained, developed and perform to ASED policy and standards. Team Leads are responsible for the proactive management of assigned Task Orders and personnel to ensure effective accomplishment of NASA - Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) requirements.
The Materials and Processes Department has a Metal Processes and Manufacturing Team Lead position available. This Team Lead position will lead a strong and high performing team that includes engineers and technicians in support of MSFC’s Metal Processes and Manufacturing Branch (EM32).
Position is on-site at MSFC and a STARid is required.
Position responsibilities include:
- Provide technical area supervision and oversight of individual and team technical performance. This may include managing subtask leads in support of the team’s effort and product deliveries, providing technical expertise in a discipline, and/or directly supporting tasks as an individual team member.
- Collaborate with the Department Manager/Deputy Department Manager to assign and develop personnel for subtask efforts and to broaden and develop personnel skills.
- Collaborate with MSFC’s EM32 Branch Chief and Team Leads in executing task lead responsibilities and in assigning and balancing team skills to various tasks to meet customer and ASED management expectations.
- Conduct Customer Expectation Surveys, Customer Communication Meetings, and End-of-Evaluation Period Task Order Performance Presentation/Self-Assessments.
- Implement the ESSCA safety program for the team, and lead by example in promoting our safety culture. Engage in and conduct the shared MSFC and ASED safety duties of performing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) assessments and conducting Safety Meetings and Safety Visits.
- Perform hiring functions to meet team support requirements: define position requirements; conduct candidate recruiting; lead interviewing and selection; and perform on-boarding activities.
- Review and approve employee travel and training needs and requests and associated expense reports.
- Perform development of employee goals and objectives and conduct performance evaluations. Support disciplinary processes with team personnel if needed.
- Use the ASED and customer awards and recognition programs to acknowledge team performance and drive team morale.
- Establish and oversee specialty subcontracting requirements, as necessary, in collaboration with the ASED Business and Finance Office to include coordination of task assignments and performance. Develop subcontractor Statements of Work and manage subcontractors.
- Ensure that tasks and subtasks are written and estimated correctly and that task and subtask technical, schedule and financial performance meet expectations.
- Perform and support task/subtask resource allocation, tracking, and control.
- Identify and manage task and subtask cost/technical/schedule risks.
- Ensure the technical quality of the work products generated by team personnel and establish and implement processes in the ASED Quality System. Ensure products are delivered on time in accordance with subtask schedules and customer expectations.
- Support the Department Manager/Deputy Department Manager in preparing Operations Review material. Provide status updates of team significant accomplishments, kudos, process improvements, and cost savings.

- Degree in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited university. Typically, educational and experience requirements are the equivalent of a BS with 20 years’ experience, MS with 18 years’ experience or Ph.D. with 14 years’ experience. Candidates with up to 5 years less experience or more experience than typical (shown above) will receive consideration for this position. The candidate is required to have outstanding technical and leadership qualifications in one or more of the following areas:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and team building skills
- Technical leadership and engineering management in aerospace disciplines
- Highly organized with demonstrated skills to simultaneously coordinate and manage multiple projects to full completion.
It is desirable for the candidate to have: - Experience leading a team.
- Experience with project management.
- Experience with performing and/or supervising manufacturing processes including: tool design, machining and equipment maintenance.
- Experience with performing and/or supervising metal processes including: heat treating and hot isostatic pressing.
- Experience with process control and risk mitigation.
- Experience with corrosion testing and analysis.
Essential FunctionsWork EnvironmentIt is expected that work will primarily be performed on-site at MSFC in office and laboratory environments with some telework at home possible. Requires the ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires the ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%)
Physical RequirementsRequires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (40%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).
Equipment and MachinesRequires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, copier, calculator, and other general office and laboratory equipment.
AttendanceNormal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal paid overtime may be required to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential FunctionsThe ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
