About the Opportunity

Our well-established and highly regarded Independent Nuclear Assurance (INA) team is seeking a skilled and experienced Nuclear Propulsion Engineer to join our Site Liaison team which provides a key role in supporting the safety of the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine programme.

As a Site Liaison Officer (SLO), you will work within our dynamic, customer facing INA team (formerly SRD) who provide independent nuclear safety and technical advice for current and future designs of Naval Reactor Plant (NRP).

This work requires detailed knowledge of the design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of NRP, as well as the implementation of associated safety cases. The role is therefore well suited to former Royal Navy Reactor Plant Operators. However, we are equally interested in hearing from engineers and scientists who have related skills from elsewhere within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme (NNPP) and who are seeking new challenges in this exciting and rewarding area of work.

INA’s well respected SLOs act in support of the Naval Reactor Plant Authorisee (NRPA) and are based at various locations across the UK (including HM Naval Bases and Dockyards), providing assurance that nuclear safety standards are met on site. The post is based at our INA Headquarters at Birchwood, providing support to the site based SLOs, the INA team and the NRPA at Bristol. As such the post holder will work with a wide range of NNPP stakeholders and some travel to sites will be required to provide cover during periods of peak activity (e.g. commissioning), and to ensure best practices are shared. Overall, this position provides a gateway into the MoD and Civilian Nuclear Programmes with opportunities to gain qualifications, broaden experience and progress a career in a modern and nationally important industry. You will be working in a close-knit team who will support your development and will value your experience.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Provision of authoritative independent nuclear safety advice to the NRPA and on-site organisations, focused on maintaining the safety of NRP, associated systems and support facilities.
  • Being a member of Authorisation Groups on site (as required), thereby seeking assurance that nuclear safety standards are being achieved and maintained.
  • Maintaining an awareness of activities on site that may affect the immediate or through-life nuclear safety of the NRP.
  • Communicating effectively with various members of the nuclear propulsion community on-site, with headquarters staff at Birchwood and with NRPA personnel at Abbey Wood.
  • Being available to support Nuclear Emergency Response Organisations.
  • Contributing to the development of safety management practices.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Detailed design knowledge and operational experience of the NRP (including a Category A Nuclear Watchkeeping qualification).
  • Good consultancy/communication skills and the ability to work directly and effectively with the customer and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work as part of a dispersed team.
  • Familiarity with safety standards such as NRPA’s NSMAs, DSA02-DNSR, or ONR SAPs
  • UK Citizenship with security clearance to at least SC.
  • UK Driver’s Licence.
