As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

Outline of Roles and Responsibilities:

The Software Test Analyst will perform formal and informal white box (unit) and black box (integrated) software testing in support of the Space Launch System and the Software Development Facility and other integration facilities in the MSFC Space Systems Division. This testing will be used to verify software functionality per established Formal and Design Level Software Requirements for the Flight Computer of NASA’s Space Launch System and will report to the Flight Software Test and Verification Lead.

The selected candidate will be well articulated and comfortable working in a CMMI Level 3 environment. Duties will include:

  • Providing test reports
  • Participating in meetings to support test readiness and anomaly reviews
  • Interacting with Software Readiness Boards in support of formal software product release
  • Performing routine assignments following detailed specifications.


Expectations included in the ASED Internship:

  • You are expected to have a valid driver’s license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations.
    • NOTICE: As of May 7, your state-issued drivers’ license must be a Star License, since NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center is located on the Army’s Redstone Arsenal, a Federal installation.
  • You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.
  • We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.


Basic Qualifications

Current enrollment in a Bachelor of Science degree program in Engineering or related STEM degree is required. Degree program from an ABET accredited institution preferred. Must have completed the sophomore year of degree program.

Must be able to provide own transportation.

Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with/Ability to read and comprehend C or C++ software and interfaces to include 1553, Ethernet, TCP/IP, and/or RS 422

  • Familiarity with evaluating test data to correlate with test findings and investigate potential anomalies.

  • Familiarity with Model Base System Engineering approach and skill sets.

  • Understanding of Systems and Software Engineering processes such as Agile, Object-Oriented Methodologies, and Processes.

  • Familiarity with data reduction and manipulation tools.

  • Ability to develop and perform test procedures, including pre-test setups such as instrumentation, data acquisition, software loading/configuration and post-test activities such as data archiving and data analysis within a simulated environment.

  • Ability to write and maintain technical documents including test plans, procedures, and formal reports to address verification requirements.

  • Ability to review program/project documents and provide relevant comments from a test perspective.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
  • Understanding of scripting languages such as Python, or other UNIX or Windows Scripting tools used to automate both product release and regression testing is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with software development tool sets, experience with the Atlassian Tool set is a plus.


Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
