Role Title: Specialist Engineering - Mechanical Engineer
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly capable Defence Maritime Mechanical Engineer to provide specialist engineering services in support of maritime sustainment programs. This role is central to ensuring the availability, safety and regulatory compliance of complex maritime platforms and facilities through technical assurance, systems engineering, risk management and the review of maintenance and engineering deliverables.
In this role, you will deliver mechanical and systems engineering analysis, verification and validation (V&V) activities, technical investigations, requirements engineering and sustainment planning. You will work closely with Commonwealth stakeholders, ship repair organisations, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and integrated project teams to optimise sustainment outcomes across the maritime domain.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering Delivery
- Provide mechanical engineering expertise to support maritime sustainment activities, materiel performance and engineering decision‑making
- Deliver systems engineering, testing and evaluation; including development and execution of V&V activities
- Deliver specialist engineering advice and assurance to ensure compliance, seaworthiness and technical integrity
Technical Governance & Assurance
- Conduct technical investigations; producing clear, defensible engineering recommendations
- Identify, analyse and manage technical risks, supporting the sustainment organisation’s engineering risk framework
- Undertake System Reviews, Engineering Assessments and Technical Audits
- Support technical assurance knowledge transfer to Commonwealth engineers
Maintenance & Sustainment Review Activities
- Provide technical input into contract documentation and undertake reviews of contractor deliverables related to:
- Preventative and corrective maintenance
- Engineering change proposals
- Compliance verification and seaworthiness evidence
- Review:
- Problem Identification Reports (PIRs)
- Unscheduled Contractor Tasks (UCTs)
- Survey & Quotes (S&Qs)
- Estate Works Projects (EWPs)
- Contribute to planning of future engineering and maintenance work packages to optimise platform or system availability and reduce sustainment risks
Systems Engineering & Requirements Management
- Deliver requirements engineering; including Systems Specifications, V&V requirements, traceability matrices and acceptance strategies
- Support planning and delivery of engineering services, regulatory compliance, resource utilisation and project outcomes
- Facilitate and support execution of validation and verification activities, ensuring alignment with maritime regulatory and Defence standards
Skills & Experience
- Degree-qualified Mechanical Engineer (or related engineering discipline)
- Experience working in maritime, Defence or other complex engineered systems
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles (e.g. V&V, requirements management, test and evaluation)
- Demonstrated experience in technical investigations, engineering assurance, and risk identification/management
- Familiarity with Defence engineering standards, regulatory frameworks and technical data management
- Ability to review and interpret technical data, maintenance information, engineering analyses and contractor documentation
Required Security Clearance Level: Negative Vetting One (NV1)
