We are seeking a
Summer 2025 Intern - AI and Astronaut Physiology to join the Humanworks Lab, with a focus on Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. The selected intern will support the development of AI and machine learning models designed to enhance NASA's understanding of the human body in space. This work will contribute to the optimization of fitness and conditioning systems, as well as overall astronaut well-being.
The lab possesses a substantial repository of data to support the development of AI and machine learning models. During this internship, the focus will be on exploratory data analysis, data provenance, and data curation-including the identification and handling of outliers-to produce clean, well-organized, and reliable datasets. These efforts are essential to facilitate the development of robust models and to support more accurate forecasting and protocol design aimed at sustaining physical and psychological performance in long-duration space missions.

Because we have strong reason to believe the position will be approved soon, we are proceeding with identifying qualified candidates and conducting interviews. **
This is a temporary role not to exceed 12 weeks.
The selected candidate will: - Develop and maintain a comprehensive database by integrating existing datasets and organizing newly acquired data.
- Apply scientific methods to classify, clean, and pre-process data to ensure consistency and usability.
- Support the design and implementation of protocols for ingesting new data streams.
- Create Python-based software tools for data analysis and visualization, including the development of interactive dashboards for efficient dataset navigation.
- Develop supplementary software artifacts to enhance data interpretation and presentation.
- Prepare clear and thorough documentation, technical reports, and user guides.
- Collaborate with NASA personnel, cross-functional teams, and departments to gather requirements and communicate findings.
- Adhere to established guidelines, protocols, and best practices in all project tasks.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the project's objectives.
Requisition Qualifications: - Currently enrolled at an accredited university.
- Completed at least 45 credit hours.
- Minimum of 2.8 GPA.
- Foundational knowledge of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
- Comfortable working in a Linux environment.
- Proficient in Python and commonly used libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and scikit-learn.
- Familiarity with data storage and retrieval systems, including SQL and file formats like Apache Feather.
- Self-motivated team player with the ability to adapt in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Results-driven and committed to completing assigned tasks on time.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage tasks effectively with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Experienced with collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Webex.
Requisition Preferences: - College Junior or Senior working towards a BS in Computer Science or equivalent.
- Courses in databases, data structures, scientific computing and data science.
- Interest in NASA and Space Exploration
- Experience in Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning through college coursework or work experience.

Essential FunctionsWork EnvironmentGenerally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
Physical RequirementsWork may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
Equipment and MachinesStandard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
AttendanceRegular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
